This ONE Ingredient Added to a Glass of Water Protects Your Heart, Sight & Prevents Cancer

We all know that drinking water is very healthy. It is the best thing you can do for your health.

But if water’s taste has become “dull” to you, add some lemon in it. And here are some advantages and health benefits you can gain from this simple mixture:

–  Lemon, like all citrus, is full of vitamin C. It is an antioxidant that improves the condition of damaged cells, slows down aging diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer and maintains your sight.

–  Lemons contain anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which can strengthen your immunity and help you to overcome flu and colds. Besides that, lemon can soothe irritated throat. -

– It also helps in the fight against skin aging. In combination with hydration, which you get from drinking water, lemon can help you stay forever young.

– Lemon helps with stomach problems and improves digestion, especially in combination with hot water or little bit of mint, which is well known for its ability to soothe irritated stomach.

– Lemon contributes in the process of cleansing your body.

– Lemon can refresh your breath. The claim that lemon can damage tooth’s enamel is just a myth. When using it in small quantities of water, the risk is extremely low.

The Mental Multiverse

“The universe is indeed an enchantment placed upon us by the World-Mind. We are all enclosed within the scene set up by it but the scene itself is a thought-created one, the power which makes us feel its reality is a mental one and even the senses so bewitched are forms of consciousness. Hence the operation of the cosmic upon the individual mind is nothing short of magic!” - Paul Brunton

We are living in a mental universe / [multiverse]. Everything we see and experience in the world, as well as everything that passes through our awareness – is mental. It is an idea. It is a thought.

Generated either by the World-Mind, (or whatever name you choose to call it – the Absolute, the Cosmic Mind, the Supreme Creator – God) or by your own Mind.

Quantum physicists have been telling us for some time now that the world we see as solid matter is far from solid; rather it is a moving sea of energy. And what is this energy?

It seems they don’t quite know the answer to that. The hidden teachings tell us that energy will be found to be an ‘attribute of mind’…something possessed by Mind. That is Mind with a capital – the World-Mind.

We were created in the image of the Absolute, or more accurately, we issued forth from this World-Mind and thus we too possess a spark of the attribute of mind and this alone is responsible for our consciousness, and indeed for the life force within us itself.

It has been well established, as many of us are aware, that we create the world we see and experience through our consciousness.

That is, the world becomes real to us when we pay attention to it. Subatomic particles are brought into manifestation, made ‘real’ by the powers of our observation.

They are molded into forms by our space-time consciousness – itself purely mental , a construct of Mind, to provide us with the experience of living in this reality system.

How To Open The Doors Of Perception At Will, Without Psychedelics

girl_door_field

“The door to the soul is unlocked; you do not need to please the doorkeeper, the door in front of you is yours, intended for you,  and the doorkeeper obeys when spoken to.” -Robert Bly

What if you found out there was a key that would enable you to open and close your doors of perception at will, void of psychedelics? What if you found out you not only held the key, but you were the key? Would you unlock the doors, or keep them shut?

Well, you are the key, and whether or not you choose to enter through the doors is a choice that, although invisible, is life changing. You are the vehicle for the trip, consider this but a mere travel summary. And for a detailed itinerary?  Well, that can only be fetched by you -not the part of you reading this, but the altered dream state part of your consciousness that will travel beyond the doors of perception to the wildness of the world where there is a livingness to all things- as it can only be found in a place with exclusive access. A place where you can travel, but no one may follow -not even the conscious, waking state version of yourself scanning these very words.

If you have experimented with psychedelics, you most likely know what it is like to sense the type of “livingness” to all things of which I speak. Even if you haven’t used psychedelics, though, you almost certainly have still experienced this same livingness to all things in the world around you to a noticeable degree at least once, but probably various times as a child -a moment where the world around you took on a shimmery glow, colours suddenly appeared brighter, sounds louder and clearer, physical sensations amplified and, most notably, you could FEEL the world around you.

I am not referring to the physical, touching type of feeling, but to the intangible, energy sense of feeling where you could almost feel the luminosity of the world around you within, and you and the luminous rested in harmony as if you were one. You were present, your perceptions altered, your senses heightened. In short,  your sensory gating channels opened to some degree, a process more commonly referred to as opening your doors of perception.

Sensory Gating Explained: The Science Behind the Doors of Perception

The “doors of perception” are the part of our brain and central nervous system responsible for filtering input from all external stimuli, involving all of your senses -feeling (both physical and nonphysical), sight, sound, taste and smell. This process, known as “sensory gating,” enables us to decipher the difference between “me” and “not me.” Through sensory gating, we are able to manage and comprehend the constant stream of sensory data from the external environment. Without it, we would be unable to filter out what matters and what doesn’t, and all sensory data would touch us deeply and ultimately, we would become overstimulated and overwhelmed and go “crazy” -according to modern medicine, that is.

Imagination and Reality Look Different in the Brain

"Turn off your mind, relax, and float down stream..."

Maybe John Lennon was onto something when he wrote those words for the Beatles' song "Tomorrow Never Knows."

It turns out that that reality and imagination flow in different directions in the brain, researchers say. The visual information from real events that the eyes see flows "up" from the brain's occipital lobe to the parietal lobe, but imagined images flow "down" from the parietal to the occipital.

"There seems to be a lot in our brains and animal brains that is directional — that neural signals move in a particular direction, then stop, and start somewhere else," said Dr. Giulio Tononi, a psychiatry professor and neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and one of the study's co-authors. "I think this is really a new theme that had not been explored."

The finding, published in the November issue of the journal NeuroImage, may lead to a better understanding of how the brain processes short-term memories and how memory is connected to imagination, the researchers said.

21 Amazing Health Tricks To Teach Your Body

Image

Whether it’s curing a throat tickle, resolving your headache in minutes or experiencing supersonic hearing, these 21 tricks are proven methods of fooling your body to achieve a desired result, whether that’s relieving pain or just having fun.

1. Cure a Tickling Throat

When you were 9, playing your armpit was a cool trick. Now, as an adult, you can still appreciate a good body-based feat, especially if it serves as a health remedy. Take that tickle in your throat: It’s not worth gagging over. Here’s a better way to scratch your itch: Scratch your ear. “When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm,” says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. “This spasm relieves the tickle.”

2. Experience Supersonic Hearing

If you’re stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with your right ear. It’s better than your left at following the rapid rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. If, on the other hand, you’re trying to identify that song playing softly in the elevator, turn your left ear toward the sound. The left ear is better at picking up music tones.

3. Calm Yourself With Cold Water

Nerves getting the best of you. Take a deep breath and spash cold water on your face. This triggers the mammalian diving reflex that is genetically in all animals including humans. The lower temperature of the water and you holding your breath also causes your body to think it’s diving into cold water. This reflex allows you to use oxygen more efficiently.

4. Overcome Your Most Primal Urge To Pee

Need to pee? No bathroom nearby? Fantasize about what ever turns you on. Thinking about sex and arousing fantasies preoccupies your brain, so you won’t feel as much discomfort, says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of male reproductive medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine.

5. Feel No Pain While Giving Blood

Love donating blood but hate the needle prick? German researchers have discovered that coughing during a needle stick can lessen the pain. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal cord.

Why You Should Start Dry Skin Brushing Today

Why You Should Start Dry Skin Brushing Today The skin is our largest organ and is responsible for detoxifying our body just like the liver, kidneys and colon (you can read my article about the 6 ways your body detoxifies itself). Dry brushing is an ancient technique which is part of the Indian Ayurveda and holds numerous health benefits. Not only this, but it’s easy and simple to do, takes only few minutes a day and is very cheap.

Health benefits of dry brushing

Dry brushing exfoliates the skin and removes dead cells, thus contributing to younger, smooth and fresh looking skin. This way the skin is able to better absorb nutrients into the body.

Dry brushing also improves blood circulation and helps the lymphatic system release toxins, thus improving its role in fighting infections and improves the immune system. You can read more about the importance of a proper blood circulation and how to improve it in my previous article. For other natural ways to cleanse your lymphatic system click here.

It also helps in cells renewal, improves muscle tone, tightens the skin and reduce cellulite by releasing fatty deposits under the skin’s surface. For more natural ways to reduce cellulite click here.
Another added bonus is stress relief. Dry brushing has meditative benefits, especially if done in a quiet place. It may reduce muscle tension and calm your mind, just like a light body massage.
As you can see, dry brushing detoxifies the body from the outside in and works on multiple levels. You can learn more about the concept of detox and how to use detox to energize and cleanse your body in my e-book The Detox Guide.
How to do dry brushing?

You should choose the right type of brush. Choose a brush with firm bristles but not too hard. The bristles should be natural, typically vegetable-derived. It’s best to choose a long handle that can easily reach to areas such as the back.

The best time to do dry brushing is in the shower before washing yourself when your skin is dry. The brush itself should also be dry. Because dry brushing energizes the body, many people prefer to do it in the morning before they shower, but you can do it any time of the day (but not too close to bedtime, as it may have a stimulating effect on you). Dry brushing can be done on a daily basis and even twice a day. Just remember to avoid brushing broken or inflamed skin.

As the lymphatic system flows towards the heart, you should always brush towards your heart using long gentle strokes (avoid back and forth movement).

Air pollution makes Beijing nearly 'uninhabitable for human beings' according to study

Beijing

After many days without rain in densely populated places like Los Angeles and New York City, it is sometimes possible to catch a small glimpse of what is an everyday reality for Beijing, China's 20-some million residents -- thick blankets of blackish smog that penetrate the air and fill the lungs of those who breathe it.

Beijing is one of the most air-polluted cities on the planet, so much so that researchers from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences declared it to be almost "uninhabitable for human beings" in a recent study. Buildings throughout the city are having to be outfitted with special air purifiers, and schoolchildren are being forced to play sports indoors, underneath special protective inflatable domes.

"It's a bit of a change having to go through an airlock on the way to class," stated Travis Washko, director of sports at the British School of Beijing, to The Guardian about some of the new ways the city's institutions are dealing with the problem. "But the kids love it, and parents can now rest assured their children are playing in a safe environment."

If it weren't for the dome, students would be forced outdoors into a thick layer of noxious pollution that almost never subsides. Air pollution has become so dense, in fact, that China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the average 18-year-old Beijing resident will spend about 40 percent of his remaining years in ill health.

New Study Links GMOs to Over 22 Different Diseases

A new study released in September of this year gives even more evidence that GMOs should have been banned before they were ever allowed on the market.

Read on to find out how “Genetically Engineered Crops, Glyphosate and the Deterioration of Health in the United States of America” pinpoints a significant correlation between GMOs and 22 diseases.

Why does the biotech industry keep hiding the toxicity of their products?

Well, there are numerous reasons – the corruption of the American and international governments, the fact that the USDA’s main man appointed by Obama was a former Monsanto executive, and the tremendously deep pockets of mega-corporations to launch propaganda campaigns – are just a few.

The aforementioned title was published in The Journal of Organic Systems. It is full of very detailed evidence of the link between genetically modified ingredients and diseases such as liver failure, urinary and bladder cancers, hypertension, thyroid disease, stroke, obesity, and more.

It is replete with telling charts and graphs that describe visually the mayhem that GMOs have unleashed on society.

Much of the study focuses on the introduction of glyphosate and its subsequent ramifications on human health.

The herbicide was introduced in 1974, but the research conducted within this study relied on data since the 1990s, since that is all that was available. Since the early 90s, glyphosate use has grown astronomically.

As the study details:
“...Glyphosate disrupts the ability of animals, including humans, to detoxify xenobiotics. This means that exposures to the numerous chemicals in food and the environment, such as endocrine disrupting chemicals and carcinogens, could be causing levels of damage that would not occur if the body were able to detoxify them.”
Though the authors admit that correlation is not proof of causation, they state that:

Harvard Study Unveils What Meditation Literally Does To The Brain

medi1-e1418335979592

Numerous studies have indicated the many physiological benefits of meditation, and the latest one comes from Harvard University.

An eight week study conducted by Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) determined that meditation literally rebuilds the brains grey matter in just eight weeks. It’s the very first study to document that meditation produces changes over time in the brain’s grey matter. (1)

“Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day. This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing.” – (1) Sara Lazar of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program and a Harvard Medical School Instructor in Psychology

The study involved taking magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the brain’s of 16 study participants two weeks prior to participating in the study. MRI images of the participants were also taken after the study was completed.

“The analysis of MR images, which focused on areas where meditation-associated differences were seen in earlier studies, found increased grey-matter density in the hippocampus, known to be important for learning and memory, and in structures associated with self-awareness, compassion and introspection.” (1)

For the study, participants engaged in meditation practices every day for approximately 30 minutes. These practices included focusing on audio recordings for guided meditation, non-judgmental awareness of sensations, feelings and state of mind.

“It is fascinating to see the brain’s plasticity and that, by practicing meditation, we can play an active role in changing the brain and can increase our well-being and quality of life. Other studies in different patient populations have shown that meditation can make significant improvements in a variety of symptoms, and we are now investigating the underlying mechanisms in the brain that facilitate this change.” – (1) Britta Holzel, first author of the paper and a research fellow at MGH and Giessen University in Germany

How To Meditate

A common misconception about meditation is that you have to sit a certain way or do something in particular to achieve the various benefits that it can provide. All you have to do is place yourself in a position that is most comfortable to you. It could be sitting cross legged, lying down in a bed, sitting on a couch etc, it’s your choice.

Top 10 Inflammatory Foods to Avoid Like the Plague

According to statistics from the World Health Organization, about 12.9 million people worldwide died from some form of cardiovascular disease in 2004. Each year, the World Cancer Research Fund estimates that some eight million people died from cancer. Heart disease and cancer, the deadly manifestation of chronic inflammation, are expected to remain as the leading causes of death in developed countries for many years to come.

But study after study shows that the risk of heart disease and cancer are modifiable by our lifestyle choices which include the food we choose to eat each day. With every bite we take, we're either balancing the pro- and anti-inflammatory compounds in the body, or tipping the scale to one end.

To shift the balance to your favor, other than incorporating more natural anti-inflammatory foods in your diet, it is also equally important to avoid or cut down on foods which are known to promote inflammation. Here, we look at the top ten foods which set the stage for inflammatory diseases:

1. Sugars

Pro-inflammatory Agent: Excessive sugar intake causes tooth decay and has been linked to increased risks of obesity, inflammation and chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Recently, it has also finally been proven that sugar, as well as dairy, are the causes of acne.

Find them in: Sugar-sweetened beverages like soft drinks, fruit drinks and punches are some of the major sources of dietary sugars that many have overlooked. Do you know that drinking a can of Coke is as good as sucking ten sugar cubes? Other obvious sugar-loaded foods to avoid or at least limit include pastries, desserts, candies and snacks. And when you are looking out for sugar in the ingredients list, note that sugar has many names: corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, golden syrup, maltose, sorghum syrup and sucrose are some of the creative names used.

The Disease of Being Busy

I saw a dear friend a few days ago. I stopped by to ask her how she was doing, how her family was. She looked up, voice lowered, and just whimpered: “I’m so busy… I am so busy… have so much going on.”

Almost immediately after, I ran into another friend and asked him how he was. Again, same tone, same response: “I’m just so busy… got so much to do.”

The tone was exacerbated, tired, even overwhelmed.

And it’s not just adults. When we moved to North Carolina about ten years ago, we were thrilled to be moving to a city with a great school system. We found a diverse neighborhood, filled with families. Everything felt good, felt right.

After we settled in, we went to one of the friendly neighbors, asking if their daughter and our daughter could get together and play. The mother, a really lovely person, reached for her phone and pulled out the calendar function. She scrolled… and scrolled… and scrolled. She finally said: “She has a 45-minute opening two and half weeks from now. The rest of the time it’s gymnastics, piano, and voice lessons. She’s just…. so busy.”

Horribly destructive habits start early, really early.

How did we end up living like this? Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we do this to our children? When did we forget that we are human beings, not human doings?

Whatever happened to a world in which kids get muddy, get dirty, get messy, and heavens, get bored? Do we have to love our children so much that we overschedule them, making them stressed and busy — just like us?

What happened to a world in which we can sit with the people we love so much and have slow conversations about the state of our heart and soul, conversations that slowly unfold, conversations with pregnant pauses and silences that we are in no rush to fill?

How did we create a world in which we have more and more and more to do with less time for leisure, less time for reflection, less time for community, less time to just… be?

Philip Comella | The Collapse of Materialism

S y n o p s i s

Can human consciousness be explained by Darwin and materialist science? Does matter exist outside of the mind, with no rationale or direction, the universe created completely by chance? Since ancient Greece, materialists have held that there is no room for purpose or design. We exist in a random and unconscious universe that has evolved through “natural selection.” However, a very different view of the universe and its creation has co-existed with the materialist point of view. In this version, the universe is the creation of a powerful and purposeful mind, one that exists outside of matter, and is, in fact, the creator of matter. For millennia, these two opposing viewpoints have clashed, often with catastrophic results.

Philip Comella proposes a profound shift in the way that we look at the exchange of beliefs between these two domains. Envisioning the end of the mechanical scientific worldview as it is currently taught, Comella believes that civilization may be at the beginning of a new epoch, a time of great spiritual awakening with humanity transcending to a higher truth, one that unifies the now colliding cultures of science and religion.

Drawing extensively from the findings of science and philosophy, Comella concludes that the materialists’ view— that man is a machine and that the mind is nothing more than an electro-chemical interaction between its neurons— is a flawed theory that fails to understand its own discoveries, including the materialists’ erroneous interpretation of quantum theory. The real conclusion revealed by quantum mechanics is that matter is not absolute and eternal, as materialists claim it to be. Many scientists now believe that it has been shown that matter originates in the mind and the mind is universal. From this viewpoint will come the ultimate understanding of the interconnection between our minds and the world around us. And as Philip Comella explains, embracing the universal mind will lead us back to ourselves and finally back to God. A groundbreaking guide for the 21st century, The Collapse of Materialism is thought-provoking and incisive, challenging and controversial, a provocative vision of a unified and transcendent future.

Hepatitis B vaccine linked to causing multiple sclerosis

vaccine

A sudden and sharp increase in the number of multiple sclerosis (MS) cases diagnosed in France back in the mid-1990s appears to have its roots in a mass vaccination campaign for hepatitis B that was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO), according to new epidemiological data published in the journal Immunologic Research.

In accordance with WHO recommendations, France implemented a campaign in 1992 promoting hepatitis B vaccines, for which 20 million French adults -- or roughly one-third of the country -- agreed to be vaccinated between the years of 1994 and 1997. By 1998, however, massive spikes in MS cases began to dominate headlines in the French media.

Prior to 1993, when the hepatitis B vaccine campaign first began, there were about 2,500 new cases of MS in France annually. Immediately after the campaign was launched, and especially after 1996, that number nearly doubled to 4,500 new MS cases per year. The most obvious cause, according to many health experts, was the vaccine.

Immediately following this revelation, vaccination rates plummeted in France and suspicions about how the hepatitis B vaccine might be triggering MS began to emerge. One hypothesis suggested that a protein in the vaccine might be very similar to a protein naturally found in myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibers that is attacked by the immune system in MS sufferers.

Since that time, multiple research projects have aimed to better understand the correlation between hepatitis B vaccines and MS. One French study found that the actual number of MS cases linked to hepatitis B vaccines is 2.5 times higher than previously assumed, while another case-controlled epidemiological study observed a definitive increased risk of MS within three years following vaccination.

Orange juice has 10 times more antioxidant power than previously thought

antioxidant

The antioxidant activity of citrus juices is 10 times higher than previously thought, according to a new analysis conducted by researchers from the University of Granada and published in the journal Food Chemistry.

Many of the chemicals that naturally occur in plant foods function as antioxidants, removing the free radical chemicals that cause cellular and DNA damage in the body and have been linked to various chronic diseases and many of the symptoms of aging. Citrus fruits are particularly high in antioxidants, and many researchers have suggested this as a potential cause for their many health benefits.

70 percent of antioxidants were going uncounted

To date, researchers have estimated the antioxidant potential of foods by simulating the digestion of food in the small intestine, in order to only measure antioxidants that can actually be used by the body. This method only allows the measurement of antioxidants in liquid form, however.

"The problem is that the antioxidant activity of the solid fraction (the fibre) isn't measured, as it's assumed that it isn't beneficial," researcher Jose Angel Rufian Henares said. "However, this insoluble fraction arrives at the large intestine and the intestinal microbiota can also ferment it and extract even more antioxidant substances, which we can assess with our new methodology."

In order to correct his limitation, the researchers developed a new laboratory method, called "global antioxidant response" (GAR), to simulate the digestion of food not just in the small intestine but the entire gut. This allows an estimate of the antioxidant activity of solid foods.

According to the GAR method of analysis, the antioxidant contents of many foods have been drastically underestimated and will need to be revised. For example, traditional antioxidant activity tests deliver a value of approximately 2.3 mmol Trolox/L for orange juice. The GAR method, in contrast, delivers a value of 23 mmol Trolox/L.

"The antioxidant activity is, on average, ten times higher than that which everyone thought up until now, and not just in juices, but also in any other kind of food analysed with this methodology," researcher Rufian Henares said.

The researchers found that 70 percent of the antioxidant capability of orange juice came from soluble fiber, rather than liquids. Based on the new values, they estimated that as much as 12 percent of the antioxidant content of the Spanish diet comes from citrus juices.

Is Consciousness A Product Of The Brain Or Is The Brain The Receiver Of Consciousness?

cson

“I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.” – Max Planck, theoretical physicist who originated quantum theory, which won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918

It’s great to see that in today’s day and age, multiple prominent scientists from all over the world have started to study and examine several different areas that deal with non-physical phenomenon and human consciousness. Truth is they’ve been doing it for decades, but it’s just now starting to receive the recognition it deserves.

“It was not possible to formulate the laws of quantum mechanics in a fully consistent way without reference to consciousness.” – Eugene Wigner, theoretical physicist and mathematician. He received a share of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963

Consciousness is the way we perceive and observe our world, the way we think,  our intentions, feelings, emotions and more. One of the biggest questions regarding human consciousness today is whether it is simply a product of our brain, or if the brain is a receiver of consciousness. If consciousness is not a product of the brain it would mean that the human physicality is not required for the continuation  of consciousness, or consciousness itself.

Below is a great video from Dr. Gary Schwartz, professor of psychology, medicine, neurology, psychiatry and surgery at the University of Arizona discussing whether consciousness is the product of the brain or a receiver of it. It’s a little overview of a subject that is full of peer reviewed  scientific research that not many people have the time to go through. It would actually be almost be impossible to go through all of it.

A Minimally Conscious Patient Suddenly 'Awakens,' Thanks to a Common Depressant

The doctors weren't expecting that the small dose of a common anti-anxiety drug called midazolam would do anything more than lightly sedate their patient for a CT scan—as intended. But said patient, who had been in a minimally-conscious state for two years following a motorcycle accident-caused brain injury, quite suddenly began to interact and converse, just out of the blue. He chatted up the anesthesiologist, talked to his aunt via cellphone, and congratulated his brother on a recent graduation.

Then, the patient reverted, just as suddenly returning to a near-vegetative existence, a relationship with the world through a pinhole of awareness and interactivity.

This "awakening," which occurred in a hospital in Pisa, Italy, is described by a team of neuroscientists in the current issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience. Following the event, the team attempted to duplicate it using the same drug. Again, the patient began to converse and interact, "appropriately" following both behavioral and verbal commands. The patient had no memory of the accident and no awareness of his current status. Normal life might as well have been yesterday.

As the drug wore off, the patient again receded.

With help from EEG recordings, the neuroscientists have so far focused on activity in two regions of the brain: the task-positive network and the linguistic network. "Our attention has focused on these two particular networks because we believe that their functional improvement has substantially contributed to determine the awakening reaction presented by our patient," they write in the current paper.

"The task-positive network, in fact, has to deal with the ability to cope with and solve cognitive tasks that require explicit behavioral responses, while the linguistic one deals with language comprehension and production," the neuroscientists explain.

Brain link for obesity and high blood pressure found

The elusive link between obesity and high blood pressure has been pinned down to the action of leptin in the brain, and we might be able to block it with drugs.

We've known for more than 30 years that fat and high blood pressure are linked, but finding what ties them together has been difficult. One of the favourite candidates has been leptin – a hormone produced by fat cells.

Under normal circumstances, when fat cells produce leptin, the hormone sends the message that you've had enough food. But in people with obesity, the body stops responding to this message, and large levels of leptin build up.

Leptin is known to activate the regulatory network called the sympathetic nervous system, and it's the activation of sympathetic nerves on the kidneys that seem to be responsible for raising blood pressure. Leptin has thus been linked to blood pressure. However, conclusive evidence has been hard to come by.

No leptin, no problem

Michael Cowley of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and his colleagues have now conducted a string of experiments that provide some evidence. Through genetic and drug experiments in mice, they have pinpointed an area in the mouse brain that increases blood pressure when it is exposed to high leptin levels.

This region is called the dorsomedial hypothalamus, and is thought to be involved in controlling energy consumption. Their findings show that high levels in leptin do indeed boost blood pressure, via this brain region.

Bacterial Waste Makes You Feel Fuller For Longer

It may not sound very appetising, but an edible powder made from waste excreted by bacteria in our guts may help people to avoid gaining weight.

A powder that provides the power to resist doughnuts <i>(Image: Getty)</i>

Stabilising a person's weight could have a major health impact, says Gary Frost of Imperial College London, because as people on Western diets grow older, they tend to put on between 0.3 and 0.8 kilograms per year on average.

A fatty acid called propionate is released when the bacteria in our gut digest fibre. Propionate makes people feel full by activating cells in the large intestine that produce the satiety hormones GLP-1 and PYY: these tell the brain that it's time to stop eating.

But to trigger a big enough dose of this appetite-suppressing signal from gut bacteria alone, people would have to eat extremely large amounts of fibre. To get around that, Frost and his team made the molecule in a concentrated form called inulin-propionate ester (IPE). "That gives you eight times the amount of someone following a typical Western diet," he says.

Pass the IPE

To test its appetite-stemming properties, the team gave powdered IPE, mixed in with fruit juice or a milkshake, to a group of overweight volunteers every day for six months. A type of ordinary fibre was given to another set of people, who acted as controls.

Only one of the 25 volunteers taking IPE put on more than 3 per cent of their body weight over that time, compared with six of the 24 controls. One reason for this might be that the IPE recipients ate around 9 per cent less over the six months.

A second experiment on 20 healthy volunteers also supported the effects of IPE. When the volunteers were invited to eat as much as they liked from a buffet, they ate 14 per cent less when given IPE than when given ordinary fibre. Levels of the satiety hormones GLP-1 and PYY were higher in recipients of IPE.

Why a Stick of Chewing Gum is More Harmful To Your Health Than Anything You Eat

People do not typically ingest gum, so they pay very little attention to its ingredients. The assumption is that if the gum is not swallowed, then the ingredients should not be a concern. However, the ingredients in gum travel into the blood stream faster and in higher concentrations than food ingredients, because they absorb directly through the walls of the mouth, and these ingredients do not undergo the normal filtration process of digestion.

Gum is typically the most toxic product in supermarkets that is intended for internal use, and it is likely to kill any pet that eats it. Commercial gum products contain roughly the same list of toxic ingredients, with differing labeling, which is virtually always designed to mislead.

Common Ingredients of Gum

After looking at several different brands of chewing gum, we found that these were the most common ingredients:

• Sorbitol
• Gum base
• Maltitol
• Mannitol
• Xylitol
• Artificial and natural flavoring
• Acacia
• Acesulfame potassium

• Aspartame
• BHT
• Calcium casein peptone-calcium Phosphate
• Candelilla wax
• Sodium stearate
Titanium dioxide

Titanium dioxide is so cancerous that external skin contact is enough to cause cancer. Be reminded that all of these ingredients absorb directly into the blood stream through the walls of the mouth. Some of these ingredients are explained in-depth, because it is prudent to correct the myth that chewing gum is harmless and even good for you (e.g. "it strengthens the teeth").

The "Sugar-Free" Sugar Alcohols

Sorbitol, maltitol, and mannitol are sugar alcohols. These are usually made from sugar, and they frequently increase the blood sugar just as much as eating sugar. However, manufacturers make deceptive "sugar-free" claims about sugar alcohols, since these ingredients are not pure sugar anymore. While such sugar derivatives are technically "sugar free" when the manipulative word games are employed, they nonetheless remain dangerous for diabetics, who are the very audience that these gums are marketed to. Let us not forget that the sugar alcohol containing gums are also marketed to improve our dental health. The sugar alcohols are even more chemically processed than white sugar is; and thus much more foreign to the body by virtue of its artificial nature, so we have reason to believe that these forms of chemical industry sugars will stimulate even more weight gain and inflammation than regular sugar. All of the evidence points in this direction. These chemically-extracted sugar alcohols are documented to cause abdominal pains and diarrhea, whilst aggravating various health conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Therefore, the immune system takes a huge hit from exposure to them. This immune suppression will in turn cause greater yeast development in the body, which will lead to cavities and allergies.

Gum Base

Instead of telling customers what they are really chewing, the phrase "gum base" is used to generalize a list of ingredients that is never actually published. As the name implies, it is the foundation agent of chewing gum. We have tried exhaustively to find exactly what modern "gum base" is made from. We found the following babble repeatedly regurgitated by all of the major gum companies. It was obviously meant to derail serious research:

8 Effective Ways to Detox GMOs and Other Harmful Substances

In a world over-run with Big Ag chemical residues and genetically modified crops (80% or more of various crops are genetically modified), it is more important than ever to learn how to potentially rid your body of these toxic creations. Below are some excellent and even enjoyable ways to rid your body of GMO toxins.

If you are vigilant about refusing GMO foods, then you are already giving yourself an enormous health boost and protecting yourself from countless potential complications that genetically modified foods can cause.

But even with stalwart attempts to avoid these creations, you are likely still ingesting them when you eat at a restaurant, take certain supplements, and even eat foods marked ‘GMO’ free – such as in the recent cases of Kellogg’s Kashi brands and Xochitl tortilla chips.

Then of course, there is the cross-pollination of many organic crops with GM varieties that only Mother Nature can control.

So what is a non-GMO eating person to do? Fortunately, there are many ways you can get GMO toxins, pesticide residues, herbicides, fungicides, heavy metals, fluoridated water, and metabolic toxins out of the body with a little effort.

With over 85,000 different toxins lurking in the modern body – it is essential to take some proactive steps toward cleansing it.

Toxins begin by moving through our blood plasma – so it only makes sense that we wouldn’t want those toxins to recycle in our blood, but instead, move through one of the channels of elimination – the skin, the bowels, our urine, our bile, or through the blood itself.

How To Rid Your Joints Of Uric Acid Crystals (Gout & Joint Pain)

joint_pain

A recent study found that a diet rich in acidic foods increases uric acid levels in the body, leading to conditions such as gout (form of arthritis), joint pain, and uric acid crystallization.

Peter was suddenly jolted from his sleep by a sharp and throbbing pain in his left foot. He looked down to see that his big toe was extremely swollen and red, so tender and sore that even the lightest friction from the bed sheet was too much to bear. This was becoming a common occurrence in his life, a highly inconvenient one at that.

Wendy could barely function at work. She struggled to even finish her morning coffee for fear of having to go to the bathroom, for every time she did, she would nearly pass out from the immense pain shooting through her belly and pubic area. This was her second case of kidney stones in the same year.

If you or somebody you know is suffering from kidney issues, joint pain, or a condition known as gout, then you probably know how unfortunate it is to experience a lower quality of life at the hands of a debilitating ailment.

Uric acid crystallization has been linked to gout, kidney stones, joint pain, and more.

According to Global RPH, approximately 2 million people suffer from gout, a form or arthritis, 75-90% of which are men. Gout has been known to lead to painful conditions such as kidney stones due to the build up of uric acid in the blood or urine.

Although there are multiple factors which can lead to high levels of uric acid in the body, a recent study suggests that uric acid build-up can be likened to one substantial factor – an acidic diet. The study explores the theory that by introducing a more alkaline diet to the body, one can effectively lower uric acid levels, thereby reducing instances of gout and other kidney and joint related issues.

What The Scientific Evidence States

The study enrolled a group of healthy female students, who had no medical problems at their regular physical examinations provided by the university, in a back-to-back 5-day study which compared urine samples from a high-protein, less vegetable/fruit laden diet (acidic) to a low-protein, high-vegetable/fruit diet (alkaline).

Researchers measured the total volume of urine, the pH, levels of organic acids, creatinine, uric acid, and titratable acid, as well as all cations (Na+,K+,Ca2+,Mg2+,NH4+) and anions (Cl,SO42−,PO4) necessary for the estimation of acid–base balance.

The study noted a linear relationship between higher acidic serum levels and the metabolic degradation of materials being consumed (diet).  Uric acid in the serum was higher in the acidic group than in the alkaline group, therefore from these observations, it is considered that uric acid may be reabsorbed more actively in acidic urine than in alkaline urine where it is more actively excreted.

Building A Foundation For An Integrated Approach To Science & Spirituality

brainscience

Religion teaches men how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go. – Galileo (1616)

This is the second in an occasional series on “deep science,” a rational way of reconciling scientific method with the human need to find meaning and purpose. Read part one: Finding Meaning In A Meaningless World

Doctor Eben Alexander went to heaven and came back. And he wants to tell you about it. Alexander’s best-selling book, Proof of Heaven, describes the doctor’s experiences during a hospital stay, during which time he was almost entirely unconscious. Alexander had magnificent visions of a beautiful world that he assumed was heaven, with angel-like beings and a ride on the back of something like a huge butterfly.

Alexander states: “A story – a true story – can heal as much as medicine can.” The problem is that Alexander’s story, or at least his interpretation of it, isn’t true. A key part of his story is that he claims he was temporarily brain-dead during his entire time in the hospital, a condition induced by a bad case of meningitis, a bacterial infection of the lining around the brain. Alexander claims that his experiences during temporary brain death constitute proof that consciousness survives the body. This is his key point in his book.

Esquire magazine ran a detailed article by Luke Dittrich on Alexander and his book. The article included a dialogue with Alexander and his associates, including the doctor who treated him for meningitis in the hospital. Alexander’s doctor states that Alexander was in a chemically-induced coma during almost his entire stay in the hospital – a coma induced by the doctor because Alexander couldn’t be physically restrained, in order to even assess his vital signs, without drugs. So Alexander wasn’t brain dead, even temporarily. Rather, he was in a chemically-induced coma. These are major issues with Alexander’s story and they undermine his trustworthiness pretty seriously. The Esquire article includes a number of other anecdotes showing Alexander’s tendency toward “audacious reinvention.”

My point in bringing up this story is that for all we know, despite our healthy skepticism about audacious claims, Alexander could have been in heaven and consciousness could survive the body’s death. So even though I find both of these possibilities very unlikely, I can’t completely rule them out. When a person makes these kinds of assertions, which contradict the current scientific worldview so significantly, reliability and honesty are very important. We also need some means for corroboration, rather than simply accepting such assertions on faith.

Rather than simply denying the validity of claims like Alexander’s, as many “hard-nosed” types would, we should be able to establish a reliable first-person science that relies on third-person corroboration. This is, among other things, what deep science is about. Again, since this is a key point: deep science will not simply throw out first-person testimonials and evidence as hopelessly subjective. Rather, it will seek ways to build a reliable first-person science in addition to the conventional third-person science.

The Truth About Stress & Its Cure

womanstress

Some years ago, I had the opportunity to teach stress management to students in my role as a personal counselor at a New York City public college. While there, I established a stress management program that emphasized relaxation training, diaphragmatic breathing, hypnosis, cognitive restructuring and procrastination training. These techniques were helpful to those who took the time to be trained. But over the years, I came to see that stress management is not only about learning techniques.

This came home to me while taking a training course in group therapy. I presented one of my stress groups as my course project. I still remember the comments of the instructor: “This is all well and good, but you aren’t really dealing with the people in the group and what’s troubling them.” After a bit of anger on my part, I came to realize that I had missed an essential point in successful stress management.

Managing stress is more than learning a few breathing techniques or yoga poses or even how to think positively. These things can certainly help treat the symptoms of stress, especially in times of need and challenge. But stress management is really about discovering what makes us happy.

Martin Seligman, a positive psychology researcher, in his book Authentic Happiness, laments the scientific neglect of life’s positive dimensions:

“Relieving the states that make life miserable, it seems, has made building the states that make life worth living less of a priority.” (1)

Happiness is a center piece to any life that is meaningful, lived with purpose and fully engaged with the world. In this article, I will explore how happiness is the foundation for living a life that is whole and satisfying.

What is stress management not about?

The media is filled with information about managing stress, losing weight, getting fit, finding the right career, making money and gaining status.  We hear of techniques to cure every ill. We’re told how to breathe, what to eat, which careers are the best, and what exercises to do for a flat stomach. In spite of this, many of us are still stressed out, overweight, out of shape, in jobs we hate and somehow discontent with our lives.

It’s even worse for the not so fortunate among us who are working two or three jobs just to survive and provide for their families, for the single parent looking for day care and decent employment at decent pay, or the homeless trapped in a vicious downward cycle. Deep breathing may not be up to the task of relieving this kind of stress.

There is a much broader vision involved in managing stress than we might at first imagine, such as knowing ourselves , our values and virtues, having a supporting and loving community of family and friends, and working for the good of others. These are the things that help create well-being and happiness. If it were as easy as trying a stress management technique to cure us, we would all be happily relaxed. Let’s take a closer look at the extraordinary contribution happiness can make in our lives.

What is happiness about?

The answer may be that it was never about abundance or techniques. It may be more about coming to know who we are and recognizing the importance of our relationships with others and our community.
