Probiotics Hold Promise for 4 Skin Conditions

A young woman eats yogurt.

Maintaining a balance between good and bad bacteria in the body has benefits beyond the digestive tract, it may also affect the health and appearance of the skin, researchers have found.

Consuming probiotics, or the "good bacteria," similar to the trillions of microorganisms that already live in the body, in foods or as dietary supplements, might help to prevent or treat certain skin conditions, some early studies suggest.

The benefit of probiotics is that they introduce healthy bacteria to the gut and create a barrier to reduce inflammation, which can trigger certain skin conditions, said Dr. Whitney Bowe, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, who has researched the effect of probiotics on acne. She said there is compelling evidence that probiotics hold promise for treating acne and rosacea.

Another exciting area of research is the development of topical probiotics, which can be applied directly to the skin, Bowe said. Several manufacturers are currently experimenting with adding strains or extracts of probiotics to their skin care products, including moisturizers, cleansers, peels and lotions, and some products are already on the market. [5 Ways Gut Bacteria Affect Your Health]

Still, further study is needed to determine which strains may work best and how many of the bacteria survive once the probiotics are spread onto the skin's surface.

People with ADHD May Have a Higher Suicide Risk

People with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have an increased risk of suicide, according to a new study. Researchers also found an increased risk of suicide in the parents and siblings of people with ADHD.

The findings suggest that genetics may link ADHD and suicidal behavior, the researchers said.

"Our study is the first, to our knowledge, to show that ADHD and suicidal behavior share genetic risk factors," the researchers wrote in their article, published today (June 25) in the journal JAMA Psychiatry. Previous studies showed that genetic influences affect people's risk of both ADHD and suicide, the researchers noted.

The results suggest it could be important to reach people with ADHD and their relatives with efforts aimed at suicide screening and prevention, the researchers said.

In the study, researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden compared suicide rates of patients with ADHD to suicide rates of people without the disorder, using data from the country's national database. The researchers looked at nearly 52,000 patients with ADHD, about a third of whom also had another psychiatric disorder, as well as about 260,000 people without ADHD.

Alcohol Linked with 88,000 Premature Deaths Yearly

A man drinks a glass of alcohol

Excessive alcohol consumption remains a leading cause of premature death in the United States, responsible for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Researchers used the CDC's Alcohol-Related Disease Impact (ARDI) online application to estimate total number of deaths that were attributable to alcohol among U.S. adults ages 20 to 64, from 2006 through 2010.  They also examined years of potential life lost across the U.S. by gender and age.

Excessive alcohol use led to nearly 88,000 deaths per year over the study period, and shortened the lives of those who died by about 30 years on average, said study researcher Dafna Kanny of the CDC. "In total, there were 2.5 million years of potential life lost each year due to excessive alcohol use," she said.

Broccoli Brew Eases Air Pollution Effect, But Is This Detox?

Broccoli sprouts

Scientists have concocted a brew made with broccoli sprouts that may help protect against the toxic effects of air pollution.

The study, published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, made headlines earlier this month. People in the study who drank the mixture, who lived in a rapidly industrializing and polluted region in China, more quickly excreted the cancer-causing chemical benzene from their bodies through their urine.

The news stories about the study, with words such as "detox tea," "body flush" and "pollution solution," might lead you to believe there's something, after all, to those juicing and herbal detox schemes sold though the Internet and hawked by people like Dr. Oz.

Not so, according to the researchers who conduct

Here Is Where You Will Find HIV

Maps are the newest weapon for fighting the epidemic

The AIDS epidemic came to the U.S. in the early 1980s. And for most of the decade that followed, ignorance, fear, and stigma abetted its spread. First, people didn’t even know about the disease. Once they did, they singled out and ostracized the groups that were most obviously affectedgay and bisexual men, intravenous drug users, and members of some immigrant groups. In that environment, it was difficult to get the White House to even talk about the epidemic, let alone secure the resources necessary for research and outreach efforts.

As Michael Hobbes documented in these pages earlier this year, the slow response to the disease was one reason the mortality rate in the U.S. was so much higher than in other countries. But once science found a way to treat the disease, the mortality rate fell. The number of people living with HIV as a chronic condition rose, while the rate of new infections stabilized. Today, the public has a much better grasp of the diseasewhat it does, how it’s transmitted, what can be done to prevent it. Three consecutive administrations, one of them Republican, have made fighting HIV here and abroad a priority.

But the disease is still around, and it is spreading. About 50,000 people a year get it. And not all of them have easy access to life-sustaining drugs. Officials have proven strategies for slowing the epidemic’s spread and treating those who have iteverything from more widespread testing to establishing a well-structured “care continuum” of drugs and therapy. But for the strategies to work, public health workers must know where to deploy them. That’s why, in 2010, the Obama Administration embraced a new National HIV Strategy. Under this plan, public health officials are supposed to move away from broad, national prevention and treatment effortsand focus instead on targeting efforts to the communities and people who most need it.

Don’t Let the Doctor Do This to Your Newborn

Baby.

Imagine you are in recovery from labor, lying in bed, holding your infant. In your arms you cradle a stunningly beautiful, perfect little being. Completely innocent and totally vulnerable, your baby is entirely dependent on you to make all the choices that will define their life for many years to come. They are wholly unaware (at least, for now) that you would do anything and everything in your power to protect them from harm and keep them safe. You are calm, at peace.

Suddenly, the doctor comes in. He looks at you sternly, gloved hands reaching for your baby insistently. “It’s time for your child’s treatment,” he explains from beneath a white breathing mask, shattering your calm.

Clutching your baby protectively, you eye the doctor with suspicion.

You ask him what it's for.

“Oh, just standard practice. It will help him or her be recognized and get along more easily with others who've already received the same treatment. The chance of side effects is extremely small.” This raises the hairs on the back of your neck, and your protective instinct kicks your alarm response up a notch.

“Side effects?”

Is veganism child abuse?

A mother is arrested for infant neglect after a hospital crisis that began with her veganism

Is veganism child abuse?
Sarah Anne Markham
In a case likely to kick up — yet again – the debate over parental responsibility regarding how children are fed, a Florida mother was arrested Tuesday for child neglect and her newborn was admitted to the hospital in a crisis that started over vegan beliefs.

Local news station WESH reports that Sarah Anne Markham’s pediatrician alerted authorities after the woman’s 12-day-old baby appeared dehydrated during a doctor visit.

The doctor said that Markham refused the medical advice to admit the child to the hospital or take the medicine offered, on the grounds that “it contained ingredients that came from animals.” After police were summoned to her home, Markham reportedly told them that she’d purchased organic soy formula for the baby, and that “she wanted to pursue a religion-based treatment and she had contacted a ‘natural’ or vegan doctor, but police said she did not share any proof of this to them.” Police added that “They asked Markham if the product was confirmed with a doctor that it was safe to give the newborn, and she replied saying that since it was organic, it must be OK.” The baby remains in protective custody.

Psychotropic Drugs Affect Men and Women Differently

Prescription painkillers, antidepressants and other brain drugs have gender-specific effects

Sex differences in the body's response to medication have long been overlooked. In fact, until the 1990s women were banned from participating in clinical trials in the U.S. Yet women are now almost twice as likely to be prescribed psychotropic medication as men, and research suggests that their different hormones, body composition and metabolism may make them more sensitive to certain drugs. Further, women are between 50 and 75 percent more likely to experience side effects. Last year the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the first sex-specific dosing guidelines for a psychopharmaceutical drug: the sleep medicine Ambien was discovered to be doubly potent for women. Here are a few of the medications that are known to act differently in men and women—but research is just beginning.

Prescription painkillers

• Women experience greater pain relief from opioid painkillers, perhaps because estrogen, which fluctuates during menstrual cycles, modulates the pain response.

• Men are more likely to overdose on painkillers than women. But women have a harder time quitting. Once addicted, they are more likely to relapse—particularly in the middle of the menstrual cycle, when glucose in the brain is lower. Glucose is necessary for self-control.

Feds finally release Burzynski cancer cure treatment

The medical powers-that-be may have finally given up the 40-year fight against a cancer-curing doctor, releasing a hold they had on his breakthrough discovery, "Antineoplastons," for Phase 3 clinical trials.

The medical powers-that-be may have finally given up the 40-year fight against a cancer-curing doctor, releasing a hold they had on his breakthrough discovery, "Antineoplastons," for Phase 3 clinical trials.Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski.

A hold that was placed on a remarkable breakthrough cancer treatment invented by Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski has finally been lifted by the FDA.

It should have been news that sent shock-waves throughout the industry, so large that even the establishment’s media could not ignore them. Spilling out onto every radio and news station in the country, if not the world.

But once again, another huge victory against the medical establishment for a Houston-based doctor that has been using a breakthrough technology he invented to literally cure cancer on many occasions, who for all-intents-and-purposes should be a household name by now and an easy Nobel Prize winner, is instead nowhere to be found, as if it never even happened.

That’s because Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski and his cancer-curing discovery, “Antineoplastons,” including a remarkable, relatively new gene-targeted therapy, threatens the very way of life to which the Western medical cancer and sick-care industry has become accustom. Raking in billions a year off of the desperate backs of people suffering from debilitating and deadly diseases in which the Western medical industry does not truly want to find a cure.

One Mouthful of Delicious Sauerkraut = 1 Bottle of Probiotics!?

Chucrut

The Proof is in the Kraut!

Dr. Joseph Mercola sent a sample of his homemade sauerkraut off to a lab and reported the findings of probiotics saying, “We had it analyzed. We found in a 4-6 ounce serving of the fermented vegetables there were literally ten trillion bacteria.”

WHAT? All those expensive probiotic bottles they sell in stores now mean nothing!?

Those findings would literally mean just 2 ounces (one mouthful) of home fermented sauerkraut has more probiotics than a whole bottle of 100 count probiotic capsules (and the probiotics are in a live liquid state). One 16 oz jar of sauerkraut is equivalent to about 8 bottles probiotics!

Fun Fact: Bacteria in your body outnumber your cells by about 10 to 1.

Imagine how much money you would save and how healthy you’d be by making your own probiotics?

In The Gluten Summit, 2013, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, told Dr. Tom O’Bryan, ““With every mouthful of sauerkraut you’re consuming billions of beneficial microbes which will be killing the pathogens in your gut driving them out and replenishing the beneficial flora in your digestive tract.” ”

The probiotic count of store-bought, shelf stable sauerkraut does not compare to home-brewed sauerkraut. Homemade batches have your love and caring attention put into them, so its no surprise they also carry much higher numbers of probiotics.

Fun Fact #2: Sauerkraut = Super Food on organic steroids!

Also cabbage is high in anti-inflammatory properties, vitamins A and C. Cabbage also reduces lipids in the bloodstream. When cabbage is fermented into sauerkraut the fermentation process opens up the cell walls accessing a higher ratio of vitamins. It has been said that sauerkraut has 200 times more vitamin C than the head of cabbage before fermentation.

Did you Know?: In 1807 French psychiatrist Phillipe Pinel said, “The primary seat of insanity generally is in the region of the -stomach and intestines.” Pinel is known as the father of modern psychiatry and came to this quote after working with mental patients for many years.

The National Betrayal of Alt Med Practitioner Dr. Harvey Bigelsen

The National Betrayal of Dr. Harvey

Just as the FDA and Codex are stripping away your ability to use nutritional supplements with therapeutic levels, so are your alternative practitioners being attacked in a vicious attempt to force them out, leaving you at the hands of an outdated medical model and Big Pharma.

We often hear the tremendous respect and gratitude for men and women in our armed forces. The ones who survived and the ones who were not as fortunate. They are considered by many to be the front-line defenders of our freedoms and our liberties. Often, though, they come home to find out that both their freedoms and their liberties are in jeopardy on home turf; their enemy is domestic, not foreign. They also find out that the respect and gratitude fade fast once back in the U.S.

Harvey Bigelsen, M.D. witnessed the Vietnam War from a viewpoint many of us would not wish on our worst enemy. His work as a trauma surgeon specializing as an Ophthalmologist allowed many to see family trees continue to flower. Dr. Bigelsen was on the front lines where triage was concerned, literally holding lives in his hands and in his quick, expertly trained, decision-making process. This impeccable medical judgment was service at the very highest level, no matter your perspective on war. He saved the lives of people who were sentenced to death and on death's door when they came to him. Legally.

Fast forward in the doctor's life past years of experience at the highest levels of healing and the highest levels of understanding the human body deepening his education and embracing other disciplines as time passed. Fast forward past four enlightening books he authored. You will inexplicably and inevitably arrive at the recent charges and confiscation that plague Dr. Bigelsen in his hometown of Nevada City, California. It is one of the most notorious cases of Nation turned traitor – the ultimate payback for years of dedicated service – namely betrayal at the hands of the medical mafia. His presumed weapon? Darkfield microscopes used to examine blood samples. His crime? A lot of menial accusations over nutritional supplement and homeopathic labeling that were not initiated by Dr. Bigelsen. Yet, he is facing jail for others' product labels ... a war hero turned criminal healer.

Lower liver cancer risk by drinking coffee daily

Coffee, after decades of bad press, is finally coming into its own. There continue to be health reports that note the benefits of having a daily cup of coffee. In addition to research which shows that a daily cup of java could have positive effects on a person's ability to stave off strokes, Parkinson's disease and type 2 diabetes, recent research has shown that coffee drinkers can now add a lower risk of getting a certain type of liver cancer to the benefits of downing their favorite beverage.

Most common type of liver cancer foiled

Researchers from the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Southern California have shown a positive correlation between drinking coffee and a lower risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. These findings, targeted to this type of liver cancer, also known as HCC, were presented at the American Association of Cancer Research's annual meeting. During that presentation, researchers noted that people who are at high risk for HCC should aim to drink coffee on a daily basis.

According to V. Wendy Setiawan, Ph.D., a doctor and associate professor at the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of California, the study involved following 179,890 women and men over the course of 18 years. The study participants were of varying races, including Latinos, Caucasians, Hawaiian Americans, African Americans and Japanese Americans. Researchers tracked the participants' coffee consumption, as well as other factors related to their lifestyles.

Natural herbs that can stimulate weight loss

Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight and keep it off knows how hard it can be. Dieters are constantly on the look out for any new product or pill that will give them an edge and allow them to slim down quick. Problem is, there is no “miracle” pill: losing weight requires hard work and dedication. Besides, many of those pills are unsafe and provide only temporary results. Diet and exercise are key to shedding pounds and looking one’s best.

However, there are certain herbs that can be added to a diet to help with shedding excess weight. These herbs come in pill or liquid form and are taken directly from the plant’s leaves so they’re all natural. They are used to enhance a dieters bodily functions, like metabolism, so weight loss is a little easier.

Here are the best herbs for weight loss:
  • Green Tea Extract: This herb has catechins (a type of antioxidants),which are proven to increase metabolism and stimulate the body’s ability to burn fat. Dieters can take two 400 mg pills a day or add 20 drops of the liquid to a drink or even food (like soup).
  • Fish oil: This is one of the most popular herbs for weight loss because it is the most effective when it comes to burning fat.  Fish oil contains omega fatty acids, which reconditions the body to use its fat for fuel instead if storing it.
studies have shown a good exercise routine combined with fish oil can lower body fat and curb cravings. Take between 1,00 and 2,00 grams a day. Start slow and gradually increase your dosage.

What is aspartame? Five surprising facts you never know about this chemical sweetener

aspartame

The controversy surrounding one of the world's most popular artificial sweeteners, aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal), continues some 30 years after the chemical was rammed through the regulatory process by pharmaceutical interests, despite its well-documented dangers. And yet to this very day, many people are still unaware of the chemical sweetener's sordid history, not to mention what aspartame is actually made from and how it affects the body and brain.

To many, aspartame is just another FDA-approved sugar alternative that has to be safe, otherwise it wouldn't be on the market. But the truth about aspartame is much more sinister, including how the chemical sweetener gained market approval http://www.fda.gov. And there's so much more to the aspartame story that you've probably never heard before, thanks to government collusion with powerful drug interests.

1) Aspartame is converted by the body into formaldehyde, a cancer-causing chemical.
Composed of three unique compounds, aspartame is a synergistically toxic chemical, meaning the sum of its individual parts is exponentially more toxic than each one by itself. And yet even in isolation, the three main constituents found in aspartame -- aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol -- are idiosyncratically toxic in their own right.

Free methanol in particular is highly toxic, converting first into formaldehyde and then into formic acid upon consumption. Unlike the methanol found in alcoholic beverages and various fruits and vegetables, the methanol produced by aspartame is not accompanied by ethanol, which acts as a protector against methanol poisoning. By itself, methanol embalms living tissues and damages DNA, and can cause lymphoma, leukemia, and other forms of cancer.

Turmeric as effective for treating disease as 14 different conventional drugs, study finds

health

It's no secret that turmeric has amazing healing properties; in fact, it's one of the most thoroughly researched plants in history. Dating back thousands of years, humans have used turmeric as both a food and a medicine, even using it to cure life-threatening diseases.

Researchers at GreenMedInfo, an organization dedicated to providing evidence-based resources to the world, found turmeric to have over 600 potential preventive and therapeutic applications and 175 distinct beneficial physiological effects. Click here for a downloadable PDF of medically researched data regarding turmeric.

Turmeric is an ancient spice traditionally used in India that gives curry its yellow color. It not only is tasty but contains highly effective compounds with medicinal properties. The most beneficial compound in turmeric is curcumin, which is also its most active ingredient, offering strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

A research project conducted by GreenMedInfo found that turmeric is capable of replacing a variety of conventional medications designed to treat various conditions including plaque build-up in arteries, inflammation and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes, inflammatory eye disease, depression, arthritis and many more.

It's been proven to be a common replacement for aspirin or ibuprofen, offering pain-fighting and anti-inflammatory abilities in a more natural way.

Below are the conventional medications that GreenMedInfo found turmeric could either replace or supplement:

How the US Government Helps McDonald's Sell Junk Food

The feds also helped bring you the Taco Bell Cantina Double Steak Quesadilla and several other fast-food gems.

The USDA's MyPlate program recommends going easy on fast food: "People who eat out more often, particularly at fast food restaurants, are more likely to be overweight or obese," it says.

Sounds sensible enough. But there's one little problem: The USDA also oversees the dairy checkoff, a group that works hand in hand with fast-food chains. That's one of the main findings in a new report by Michele Simon, a public health lawyer who writes about food politics. The bulk of the dairy checkoff's work with fast-food chains happens through a marketing group called Dairy Management Inc., which regularly helps companies create and promote menu items that contain dairy—many of which are a far cry from USDA's recommendations for a healthy diet. Looks like your mother was right when she told you to sit up straight.

There's growing evidence that good posture contributes to a range of health benefits, from reducing back and joint pain to boosting mood. Health-care practitioners from physical therapists to surgeons to psychologists increasingly take posture into account when evaluating patients, and offer tips and tools for improvement.

Good posture doesn't just mean standing with the shoulders thrown back. More important is maintaining good alignment, with ears over the shoulders, shoulders over hips, and hips over the knees and ankles. Body weight should be distributed evenly between the feet.

Natural Antibiotics To Stockpile Now: 10 Herbs & Foods That Kill Superbugs

herbs-kill-superbugs

There is currently an over-prescribing by the modern healthcare industry of today’s antibiotics which is rendering them increasingly less effective. Contributing to this trend is the use of antibiotics in factory-farm livestock.

When he received his Nobel Prize for medicine in 1945, Alexander Fleming, the pioneer of penicillin, the first synthetic antibiotic, said, “It is not difficult to make microbes resistant to penicillin in the laboratory by exposing them to concentrations not sufficient to kill them.” He continued by saying, “There is the danger that the ignorant man may easily underdose himself and by exposing his microbes to non-lethal quantities of the drug make them resistant.”

Bacter is a part of life and it has been throughout history. When we take antibiotics persistently, we kill the “good” bacteria, which gives rise to more resistent “superbugs”. In the event that you need to kill a superbug, below are 10 herbs and foods that can cure the issue:

Bradley Bartholomew | The Spiritual Genome: Is Your DNA A Universal Quantum Computer?

S y n o p s i s

The Spiritual Genome brings to the forefront the theory of a networked intelligence in the DNA. He clearly outlines this theory that the DNA of all living creatures (including plants) is connected in the quantum substratum, and that it is this networked intelligence which constitutes the essential oneness from which springs all the diversity of life that we see around us. Bradley Bartholomew’s book illustrates that this networked intelligence is governed by a level of computer processing declared as the ultimate source of life. This he says is demonstrated in how memristors in the DNA enable the storing of data, which has a direct bearing on such widely held beliefs about past lives and reincarnation. The Author cohesively explains how the DNA can act as a universal quantum computer with sufficient processing power to potentially enable the generation of the entire universe. The Spiritual Genome explores how DNA acting as a universal quantum computer is foreshadowed in the Hindu Upansishads written more than 2500 years ago. The Upanishads are interpreted using state of the art neuroscience as well as Quantum Mechanics. This is said to not only enable the precise location of the Inner Self, but also demonstrates that what we experience through our five senses is capable of being generated from within. It can also be generated through a Quantum Mechanical interpretation of Maya; the ancient Hindu doctrine of the illusory nature of all things. In the words of Brad Bartholomew the Author, “We find that all this "diversity" that we see around us is in fact a virtual reality nested in the networked intelligence”.

B i o

Bradley Bartholomew initially trained as a lawyer in Queensland, Australia. He subsequently came across the works of Sigmund Freud and experienced a profound realization that Freud's Unconscious Mind and the Hindu Inner Self were one and the same. From then on he has devoted his life to tracking the Inner Self. After spending considerable time in an Ashram in India he wrote several articles about Hindu Philosophy in the 1990s that were published in prestigious philosophical journals in India including the Indian Philosophical Quarterly. His revelations that the Hindu Upanishads have a Quantum Mechanical interpretation led him back to University to formally study Physics and Genetics where he made a pivotal discovery how the DNA acts as a Quantum Computer. This discovery has brought Hinduism into the information age.

10 Magical Effects Music Has On the Mind

Image

Every fan of music knows the tremendous power it can have over both thoughts and emotions.

Great music can transform an ordinary day into something magical, even spiritual. It can provide solace, release, strong sensations and more. But music’s influence spreads further still: right up from our genetic code, through our thoughts and bodies and out into how we relate in groups.

1. Improve verbal IQ

Practicing the piano won’t just improve your musical abilities, it can also improve your visual and verbal skills.

A study of 8 to 11-year-olds found that, those who had extra-curricular music classes, developed higher verbal IQ, and visual abilities, in comparison to those with no musical training (Forgeard et al., 2008).

This shows the benefits of learning an instrument are not purely musical, but extend into cognition and visual perception.

2. Feeling the chills

Have you ever felt chills down your spine while listening to music? According to a study by Nusbaum and Silvia (2010), over 90% of us have.

How much you feel, though, depends on your personality. People who are high in one of the five personality dimensions called ‘openness to experience’, are likely to feel the most chills while listening to music.

In the study, people high in openness to experience were more likely to play a musical instrument, and more likely to rate music as important to them.

3. Active listening amps up happiness

If you’re not feeling the chills, perhaps you should try a little harder.

A recent study contradicts the old advice that actively trying to feel happier is useless.

In research by Ferguson and Sheldon (2013), participants who listened to upbeat classical compositions by Aaron Copland, while actively trying to feel happier, felt their moods lift more than those who passively listened to the music.

This suggests that engaging with music, rather than allowing it to wash over us, gives the experience extra emotional power.

S y n o p s i s

Even though a full two-thirds of Western cultures suffer from weight issues, most people don’t fully understand the mystery surrounding this… but now you can. This scientifically supported solution allows you to finally take control of your weight with action that’s almost as simple as ‘flipping a switch’…

If you’ve ever struggled with losing weight and keeping it off, I don’t have to tell you it’s a challenge. You already know…

What if losing weight could be as easy as flipping a switch?

I know that sounds incredible… But now there’s an abundance of research telling us that may be possible.

The Fat Switch

In his new book, The Fat Switch, Dr. Richard J. Johnson, presents news-breaking, science-based studies that will reverse current thinking on both the cause and treatment of obesity…

And by looking at why people gain excessive weight, Dr. Johnson has discovered why obesity is so hard to treat, and why so many people lose weight only to rapidly regain it.

Based on his breakthrough research, Dr Johnson provides a detailed plan on how to prevent weight gain and to lose weight. He also lays out how this research will soon result in treatments to end obesity, something that has been the Holy Grail for those suffering from being overweight.

In a nutshell, this is what he’s uncovered from decades of research:

Those of us who are obese eat more because of a faulty "switch" and exercise less because of a low energy state. If you can learn how to control the specific "switch" located in the powerhouse of each of your cells – the mitochondria – you hold the key to fighting obesity.

So, if you’ve noticed you have less energy, tire more easily with exercise, or struggle to burn fat, take heart. We now know the reason why. And in just a few short moments, so will you.

B i o

Combat age spots naturally with these foods

food

Also known as "liver spots," age spots have nothing to do with health changes to the liver and everything to do with the skin and its exposure to sunlight as well as the natural process of aging. Although the Mayo Clinic says that they "are harmless and don't need treatment," (1) many people seek to remove the flat, colored skin spots via surgery or using creams that promise to diminish their sometimes unsightly appearance.

Still, there are those who have deeper concerns about age spots, saying they indicate that the body is out of whack. For example, one raw food expert writes on the blog BeautifulonRaw.com, that age spots are telltale signs that the body has toxins and that such outward signs "of deteriorating appearance should be viewed as warning signs of degeneration taking place inside." (2)

Many natural foods exist to help fight the appearance of age spots, so other questionable and costly measures need not be considered.

Best foods to eat to fight age spots

Dr. James F. Balche, a Certified Nutritional Consultant who is a member of the American Medical Association and a natural health advocate, suggests eating more raw vegetables (3). He advises that upwards of 50 percent of diets should involve raw foods, since they include nutrients that boost skin health while also getting rid of toxins in the body that can contribute to the development of age spots.

Oranges in particular are suggested to promote skin health. Dr. Balche explains that their high vitamin C content helps repair cell damage in the skin as well as prevent any new damage from developing in the first place (3). It's also good to know that the George Mateljan Foundation's web site, The World's Healthiest Foods, says that oranges have been shown to fight certain cancers, including skin cancer (4).

How eating a plant-based diet can save the world

diet

It seems that we are heading toward an environmental crisis. Global temperatures are rising; ice caps are melting, and much of our green land is turning to desert. Resources such as water and fossil fuels are becoming scarce, whilst the demand for them increases due to growing populations and widespread industrialization.

If humans are to continue living on this earth, it is evident that we need to start changing some of our habits. A good place to begin may be with the food that we eat.

The Plant-Based Diet

Our food choices are powerful. Not only can they affect the way we think, feel and perform, but they can also have an impact on the planet we live on.

Over the last 100 years, rises in affluence have led to a marked shift in our dietary patterns. As our economic power has increased, so too has our consumption of meat and dairy products, especially in the Western world. In 2012, the people of the USA consumed around 52 billion pounds of meat, compared to 9.8 billion in 1908 [1]. Similar patterns are also being observed in less developed regions, as industrialization spreads across the globe.

Just because we have the option to consume more and more animal products does not necessarily mean that it is a good idea. A report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlights that current practices of agriculture and livestock production contribute on a massive scale to climate change, air pollution, land degradation, energy use, deforestation and biodiversity decline [2].

Top 5 health benefits of eating mangos

mango

The juicy, tropical flavor of mangos are enjoyed by many, but there are other benefits of eating the fruit beyond its flavor. In fact, June is National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables month, and according to Mango.org, June is also National Mango Month. All the more reason to hone in on this healthy fruit!

Aside from the delicious taste, mangos are full of health benefits.

Top 5 health benefits of mangos

1) May prevent certain cancers. Discoveries have found that mangos contain a large amount of polyphenols, which play a role in fighting free radicals and protecting against cell damage, which could lead to cancer (1). Specifically, it's been found that many of its compounds have the ability to combat breast and colon cancer cells. Furthermore, mangos have high levels of flavonoids like beta-carotene and alpha-carotene, which help protect against oral cavity and lung cancers (2).

2) Help eye and skin health. Mangos have a high vitamin A content, which is good for helping to keep bones, skin and eyes healthy. Eating one cup of mangos provides the body with approximately 35 percent of the vitamin A needed for optimal functioning (3).

3) Help reduce blood pressure. Because this fruit has good potassium levels, yet is low in sodium, it's considered ideal for those looking to lower blood pressure (2).

8 Home Remedies That Actually Work

duct-tape

Sick of spending money on ‘miracle cures’ that don’t really work? Here are 8 remedies using items found lying around the house that really do work…

Duct Tape to Remove Warts

In 2002, a group of doctors compared duct tape’s effectiveness with liquid nitrogen in removing warts. After two months of wearing duct tape on a daily basis and using a pumice stone about once a week to exfoliate the dead skin, 85 percent of patients’ warts were gone, whereas freezing only removed 60 percent. “The question is whether there is something in the chemical adhesive itself, or if the occlusion (suffocation) causes the destruction of the wart,” says New York City–based dermatologist, Robin Blum, MD. “The other thinking is that the duct tape causes irritation, which stimulates our body’s immune cells to attack the wart.”

Vapor Rub to Cure Nail Fungus

While there are no studies to prove coating infected toenails with vapor rub once or twice a day is an effective treatment for nail fungus, a basic Internet search results in a number of personal testaments to the medicinal ointment’s fungus-killing powers. “I’ve heard many patients say that vapor rub does help, but I’m not exactly sure why,” Dr. Blum admits. While some argue it’s the menthol in the balm that kills the fungus and others say it’s the smothering effect of the thick gel, if used consistently, vapor rub has been shown to get rid of not just the fungus, but the infected toenail, too, which will turn black and eventually fall off. When the new nail grows in, it should be fungus-free.

Meta-study debunks myths about fat and cardiovascular disease

eggs-not-sin

Nutrition is in turmoil. Old ideas are being challenged – such as meat, dairy and eggs are bad for your heart. The truth lies in the carbs.

More than 50 years ago, a positive relationship was noted between levels of LDL-cholesterol (the so-called “bad cholesterol”), dietary intake of saturated fat and coronary artery disease.Dairy products and meat abound in saturated fat. It seemed to make sense, therefore, for people to keep their LDL-cholesterol level as low as possible in order to reduce heart disease. Nutritional recommendations were made for everyone to eat less fat, particularly less saturated fat. It was also recommended that everyone limit their egg intake, since eggs contain a lot of cholesterol. There would be also another benefit from eating less fat. Fat contains twice as many calories per gram as protein and carbohydrate, so eating less fat should help prevent obesity.

These recommendations turned out to be unhelpful in preventing obesity, which has skyrocketed in the United States and many other places around the world, albeit for many reasons. But how effective were they in preventing cardiovascular disease?Surprisingly, nutrition scientists found it difficult to nail down their effectiveness. The most recent study to examine the influence of saturated fat on coronary artery disease was just published in the prestigious Archives of Internal Medicine.

Resveratrol Supplements May Harm Fetus, Primate Study Suggests

A glass of wine and pills of resveratrol.

Red wine contains the compound resveratrol, which is also available as a supplement.

Taking the popular supplement resveratrol during pregnancy may cause abnormalities in the fetus, according to a new study done in primates called Japanese macaques.

Although the study was conducted on animals, the researchers recommend that pregnant women should refrain from taking supplements of resveratrol, a compound that can also be found in red wine, and is touted to have anti-aging and heart-health benefits.

"Our results would suggest, and I would recommend, that women planning on getting pregnant or who are pregnant should not take these resveratrol supplements," study author Dr. Antonio Frias, director of the diabetes and pregnancy program at Oregon Health & Science University Center for Women’s Health and a scientist at OHSU's Oregon National Primate Research Center, told Live Science.
