Vitamins for acne: nutritional secrets to clean skin from the inside out

acne

Affecting as many as 50 million Americans, acne is the country's most common skin disorder. And while the teen years may first come to mind when thinking about acne, people from all age groups -- nearly 85 percent of the population, in fact -- suffer from the condition over the course of their lives. (1)

While there are plenty of over-the-counter medications for acne, these may contain chemicals which cause everything from skin irritations to birth defects. It's no surprise, then, that an increasing number of people are turning to alternative acne treatments. Read on to learn about the power of vitamins for acne, as well as other safe, natural remedies for clear, clean skin from the inside out.

Vitamin & Mineral Magic

Vitamin supplements offer help for acne sufferers and involve no harsh chemicals or toxins. Some leading vitamins and minerals used in the treatment of acne include:
  • Beta-carotene: Beta-carotene -- found in fruits, vegetables, eggs, whole milk, butter and a number of other foods -- is used to treat acne, as well as a number of other skin conditions including eczema, cold sores, psoriasis, wounds, burns, sunburn and many others. (2) Applied to the skin, beta-carotene does everything from reducing wrinkles to protecting against sun damage.
  • Zinc: Dubbed an "essential trace element" to human health, zinc has long been used for the treatment of acne. As a topical application, it not only leads to clearer skin but is also helpful in healing wounds and treating herpes simplex infections. (3) Combined with essential fatty acids, including flaxseed and evening primrose oil, zinc can be used to ward off clogged pores which lead to acne.

Ending Pain Could Make Us Live Longer

The more that researchers look into the science of extending life, the more they find that, often, a simple change can have extreme benefits. The latest? Knocking out a pain receptor that goes wild in older people seems to extend the lives of mice by roughly 15 percent.

Assuming an average age of 80 years or so, you're looking at a good half decade or more of high-quality life, if the results of the study can be translated to humans. A few weeks ago, scientists reported that boosting a growth factor in mice can repair brain and muscle tissue, reversing aging's effects. This latest study, published by researchers from the University of California-Berkeley in Cell, purports to prevent one of the causes of aging altogether.

When you feel pain, the nerves in your body send signals to your brain to tell you to stop doing whatever painful thing you're doing—but, actually, the pain itself might be killing you. Mice who had their TRPV1 pain receptors genetically knocked out displayed a "youthful metabolic profile at old age," giving researchers a clue about why pain—especially in old age—might be in and of itself deadly.

"Older people report being in pain more than younger people—they say that it's because they're old," Andrew Dillin, author of the study, told me. "We turned it around the other way: Maybe they're old because they're in pain. Maybe it's pain that drives the aging process."

To be sure, there are many things that drive the aging process, but how people perceive pain could be a common one, Dillin said. As people age, they often build up something known as the CGRP molecule, which binds to the TRPV1 pain receptors. Those people are more likely to have metabolic problems later in life, which can lead to many of the signs of aging.

Study finds widespread antibiotic resistance in nature

Scientists have discovered that the natural environment is a major reservoir of antibiotic resistant genes

Resistance to commonly used antibiotics are in the genes of bacteria everywhere, researchers at the University of Lyon in France have discovered.

A worldwide study of the gene sequences of bacteria, published in the journal Cell Biology today, has found resistance across 71 environments, including oceans, soil and human feces.

The researchers analysed gene samples from public repository websites.

Lead author of the study, Joseph Nesme, said while the finding that antibiotic resistance exists in the environment is not new, the results showed they were present in considerable abundance.

They found that 30 % of total known antibiotic drugs resistance genes could be found in a single soil sample.

Lose belly fat the natural way

weight-loss-natural

As summer approaches, most of us would like to lose a little excess ‘trim’ off our bellies. Some quick easy steps to follow to help you do it naturally.

Cut down on the alcohol. It’s an absolute killer for belly fat, and one of the biggest causes. If you’re a daily drinker, you really need to cut that back. Try drinking only a couple of days per week, or just weekends. To help shrink that belly, it certainly shouldn’t be more than 4 or 5 days in the month.

Quitting the junk food is an absolute must, as it has too many carbs. Avoid processed and ready-made meals at all costs, and stay away from foods that are artificially sweetened. No need to list them, you all know what we’re talking about.

Dumping the processed foods means trying to consume more whole foods. So, eat more poultry, lean meat, fresh fish, eggs. Green leaf vegetables, like spinach, broccoli and cabbage are also a must. To get the fats you do need, look to sources like nuts, olive and fish oils.

Get more protein in your diet. Protein will escalate your metabolism, which means your body will burn fat quicker.

The drinkable super food – Green Tea

Why drink green tea? The question might be, why not?

green-tea-superfood

Tea, whether it be green or black, is native to China and India, and has been consumed in those areas for centuries. It’s only in recent years that it has become more popular in the United States. After water, it is considered the most consumed beverage in the world, although only 20% of this is green tea. Green tea contains more anti-oxidants than any other type of tea, and consumed unsweetened, contains no calories. So, what are the potential benefits of drinking green tea?

Well, to begin, green tea greatly reduces chance of cardiovascular problems and heart disease. A Japanese study showed that people who were drinking 5 or more cups per day significantly lowered their chances of heart problems compared to those drinking 1 or less.

The natural chemicals found in green teas have been shown to help reduce the growth of certain cancerous tumors in animals. Green tea drinkers appear to lower their chances of getting pancreatic cancer as well. In fact, in countries where green tea is consumed more liberally, cancer rates tend to be lower.

Some studies, although not 100% conclusive, also show that drinking tea may reduce the possibility of type 2 diabetes.

There is now some evidence that green tea may help with weight loss as well. By raising the metabolism of your body, fat gets burned more efficiently, and increases your energy levels

Mental Muscle: 4 Body Postures for a Better Brain

The body can influence the brain by the feedback it sends up the nervous system

The brain largely controls the body, but the body can also influence the brain, by the feedback it sends up the nervous system. In fact, the body and mind work together to create our perceptions of the world.

Researchers have looked at how the brain interprets the signals coming into it from the rest of the body. Here are some of the ways you can use your body to improve your mind.

Smiling can bring feelings of calm and happiness

Smiling for no reason may trick the brain and make people feel less stressed, and happier, studies have suggested. In one experiment, participants were asked to hold chopsticks in their mouths, a pose that activated their facial muscles as if they were smiling. The researchers found that these participants did better at stress-inducing tasks than did their counterparts who performed the tests with a straight face.

In a similar experiment, published in 1988, participants who were forced to smile by holding a pen in their mouths rated cartoons as funnier, compared with others who weren't forced to smile.

Open your arms to feel powerful

Taking certain poses can create a feeling of power. Research suggests that holding a posture that opens up the body and expands personal space may even alter hormone levels, making a person feel more powerful and more willing to take risks.

10 Health Woes Summer Can Bring

A wooden sign points the way to a beach.

Summer fun can bring certain health risks.

Summer's almost here, and so are microbes and other environmental woes that can bring your sun and surf fun into a halt.

Among the infections that tend to come when the temperatures rise, some are mild while others can be deadly.  From poisonous plants to "brain-eating" amoebas, here are ten health hazards you should be aware of this summer:

Valley fever, also called coccidioidomycosis, is an infection by a fungus that lives in soil. People become infected by breathing in the spores of the fungi from the air.

This fungus is thought to grow best in soil after heavy rainfall, and then to disperse into the air during hot, dry conditions. Researchers have found an increase in the number of infection during hot and dry weather conditions, for example during drought, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In the U.S., these fungi are found in Western states including California and Arizona, but have also been recently found in south-central Washington.

Overexposed? Camera Phones Could Be Washing Out Our Memories

Rebecca Woolf takes a lot of photos of her children for her blog, Girl's Gone Child, but says she tries to not let the camera get in the middle of a moment.Rebecca Woolf takes a lot of photos of her children for her blog, Girl's Gone Child, but says she tries to not let the camera get in the middle of a moment.

Los Angeles blogger Rebecca Woolf uses her blog, , as a window into her family's life. Naturally, it includes oodles of pictures of her four children.

She says she's probably taken tens of thousands of photos since her oldest child was born. And she remembers the moment when it suddenly clicked — if you will — that she was too absorbed in digital documentation.

"I remember going to the park at one point, and looking around ... and seeing that everyone was on their phones ... not taking photographs, but just — they had a device in their hands," she recalls.

"I was like, 'Oh, God, wait. Is this what it looks like?' " she says. "Even if it's just a camera, is this how people see me? ... Are [my kids] going to think of me as somebody who was behind a camera?"

Today, Woolf still takes plenty of pictures, but she tries to not let the camera get in the middle of a moment, she says.

Effect On Childhood Memory

With parents flooding their camera phones with hundreds of photos — from loose teeth to hissy fits to each step in the potty training process — how might the ubiquity of photos change childhood memories?

Scientists create antibody that blocks pain and itchiness

Antibodies

The pharmaceuticals used to treat pain haven’t changed substantially in many years, and they all come with a range of possible side effects. In the case of strong opioids, the potential for dependence or overdose sometimes outweighs the benefits. A team of researchers from Duke University may have discovered an alternative to the drugs traditionally used to treat pain. They have developed a highly specialized antibody that can dull the pain response by acting directly on neurons.

Professor Seok-Yong Lee was originally seeking to isolate a particular type of sodium channel called Nav1.7 found on neurons in order to study its structure. Sodium channels regulate the flow of sodium through the membrane of a neuron to control the action potential — that is, it controls the firing of electrical signals by the neuron. The Nav1.7 channel subtype is known to be involved in the generation of pain and itch sensations. Lee used antibodies to capture the channel proteins for study, but he got to wondering if it might be possible to create an antibody to inhibit the function of the channel in living organisms.

neuron

An antibody is a type of protein produced by the immune system of all vertebrates. They are part of the so-called adaptive response that attaches to pathogens and marks them for removal from the body. When you get vaccinated against a disease, it is the antibodies produced by the immune system in response that give you the protection. Researchers have long known they can generate antibodies in the lab that target a certain molecule or structure (called an antigen), and that’s what the Duke researchers did in this case.

8 Beers That You Should Stop Drinking Immediately

http://themindunleashed.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/villageee.jpg

Here are the 8 beers that are commonly found in bars in United States that you should stop drinking immediately.

Many of us choose what we eat very carefully, or at least dedicate our minimum attention to it. But when it comes to drinks, especially alcoholic beverages, we do little to make the best decisions for our health. Which is a HUGE mistake. All the work for your body can be ruined in a weekend out. While foods and non alcoholic beverages are required to list their ingredients and are monitored by the FDA, beer does not belong in either. Alcohol industry had lobbied for years to avoid labeling its ingredients. Some to protect its recipes, but most – to hide harmful ingredients.

Here’s some harmful ingredients that are commonly found in beer:
  • GMO Corn Syrup
  • GMO Corn
  • High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Fish Bladder
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
  • Natural Flavors
  • GMO Sugars
  • Caramel Coloring
  • Insect-Based Dyes
  • Carrageenan
  • BPA
  • & lots more!

Even Temporary Weight Loss Can Have Heart Benefits

Image of human heart

Adults who lose weight may be able to reap long-term cardiovascular health benefits, even if they gain the weight back, according to a new study.

In the study, researchers found that the less time adults carried around extra body fat, the less likely they were to experience cardiovascular health-related issues, such as high blood pressure or an increased risk of diabetes later in life.

The results also showed that losing a significant amount of weight — for example, going from being obese to overweight, or from being overweight to normal weight — at any point in adulthood may reduce cardiovascular health risks, even if a person regains the weight.

In the study, the researchers followed 1,273 British men and women for up to 64 years. The data came from the U.K. Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD). At several points in the participants' lives — including childhood and ages 36, 43, 53 and 60 to 64 — the researchers classified the people as normal weight, overweight or obese. During the course of the study, the researchers also examined the participants' blood pressure, took blood samples from them and asked them if they smoked.

"Our study is unique because it followed individuals for such a long time — more than 60 years — and allowed us to assess the effect of modest, real-life changes" in body fat, study author John Deanfield, of University College London in the United Kingdom, said in a statement.

Arsenic in drinking water found to lower intelligence of children

health

It might not seem like all that common of a place for heavy metals to be hiding, but your drinking water could be harboring poisons that are making your children dumb. A new study published in the journal Environmental Health found that children exposed to arsenic in drinking water, even at very low levels, experienced a 5- to 6-point drop in IQ score compared to other children.

The first of its kind to be conducted in the U.S., the new study looked directly at drinking water contaminants and their correlation to intelligence. A research team led by Joseph Graziano, Ph.D., a professor of environmental health sciences at Columbia University in New York, evaluated 272 children in grades 3-5 from across the state of Maine. Each of the children had been exposed to arsenic through well water consumed at home.

The researchers chose the Augusta area of Maine, where most households use well water and high arsenic levels had previously been detected. Using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, also known as WISC-IV, the team evaluated each child's IQ level, accounting for outside factors like maternal IQ, education, school district and family size, all of which might affect end IQ scores.

Based on this assessment, it was determined that, among children exposed to at least 5 parts per billion (ppb) of arsenic, a relatively small amount of the toxin, IQ scores dropped by as much as 6 points. However, average contaminant levels of arsenic were found to exceed 9.88 ppb, with almost one-third of the samples exceeding 10 ppb.

"Everyone was a little taken aback by that," stated Professor Amy Schwartz from the University of New Hampshire to the Kennebec Journal about the findings. Schwartz helped coordinate the testing of the children for the study. "This is a great piece of public health research. People shouldn't panic, but be informed."

Food addiction more than willpower, a serious disease suffered by many

food

With her image blurred and identity shared only as "Mary," a 58-year-old woman told NBC Today about her serious struggles with food during a segment called, "Secret Struggle: Addicted to Food". However, her issue is unlike many people who often crave some extra potato chips on occasion or indulge in another bowl of ice cream.

Instead, Mary says her relationship with food is "a 24-hour obsession," explaining that the worse she felt, the more she'd eat. For Mary, eating "more" meant consuming several super-sized fries in addition to numerous fast food burgers . . . in one sitting. In a similar fashion, another food addict shared his story on the segment, saying, "Everyone says to take it one day at a time . . . I like to think about it as one convenience store at a time."

The severity behind food addictions

Indeed, the addiction to food is a real issue, despite the social stigma that eating disorder expert Dr. Ira Sacker says involves thoughts of obese people as having a lack of willpower. He explains that people jump to conclusions about overweight people, overlooking the fact that food addiction is a disease in which a person constantly thinks about food, is unable to control cravings and plans binges, including ones that may involve eating in secrecy. "Food addictions," Dr. Sacker says, "begins as disordered eating and as it gets worse, becomes an eating disorder."

Using a recovery approach based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous is an international recovery program that aims to help people with their food obsessions so they can live healthier lives. They describe food addiction as "an illness of the mind, body, and spirit for which there is no cure" and have steps in place to help others address every level of their particular food issue. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, research has linked junk food addiction to being just as serious as drug addiction. In fact, brain imaging scans have shown that the changes in brain circuitry are the same in drug addicts as they are in obese individuals.

GMOs encourage weight gain and obesity, researchers discover

obesity

Looking around, it's no secret that Americans are putting on the pounds unlike any other time in history. Sure, we can't discount sedentary lifestyles, processed foods and outrageous sugar consumption as contributing factors. At the same time, an elephant in the room is often overlooked -- one known as genetically modified food. Researches are beginning to connect the dots, realizing that the possibility of GMOs contributing to weight gain is not as far-fetched as once thought.

GMOs, bigger appetites and the fattening of America

A long-term project in Norway investigating the health effects of genetically modified foods has come to some startling conclusions regarding the role that GMOs play in the worldwide obesity epidemic. Over a period of 90 days, test rats were fed either food containing genetically modified corn or feed which did not contain GM corn. The scientists discovered that the rats fed a GM corn diet had bigger appetites and grew fatter than those on the non-GM diet. It was also found that rats fed a diet of fish raised on GM corn had a similar result -- increased weight gain.

As noted in ScienceNordic, "If the same effect applies to humans, how would it impact on people eating this type of corn over a number of years, or even eating meat from animals feeding on this corn?" asked lead researcher, Ashild Krogdahl, PhD, a professor at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science.

Five best foods for fighting depression

depression

Depression is a cruel disease. It starts out as an unobtrusive emotion and, when left unattended, eventually becomes a life altering and sometimes even a life threatening condition. Judging from the many stories shared on the internet describing actual cases of depression, one thing seems to stand out - a certain lack of hope. This hopelessness is further compounded by the fact that it is accompanied by a helpless feeling and manifested through antisocial behavior that characterizes depressed people.

Aside form omega 3 fatty acid rich foods, below are some more examples of foods that can also have a beneficial effect on mood:

Turkey - This food contains tryptophan, an amino acid needed to produce serotonin, a brain chemical. It is a deficiency in serotonin production that is thought to cause depression, so increasing its production could possibly address symptoms. A study published in the online journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior shared that tryptophan can be used as an anti-depressant in mild to moderate cases of depression and there is evidence to support its ability to decrease aggression. Tryptophan is also found in meat, beans and eggs.

Vegetables, nuts and whole grains - This food group contains B vitamins: folic acid, B2, B6 and B12. In a study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, it was suggested that low levels of the B vitamin, folic acid and high levels of homocysteine, a high level protein, can likely produce depression. It was further suggested that increased doses of folic and vitamin B12 could potentially improve treatment outcome in depression.

Harmful Bacteria Are Frequent Flyers in Aircraft Cabins

How far does the average airliner travel in a week? How many cities? How many continents? How many passengers might alight to spend several hours at a time in close confines with their fellow humans and, of course, the surfaces of the airplane itself? I have no idea either, but we could dream up some fairly insane upper limits, all converging on basically "all of them" and "tens of thousands."

It's hard to imagine a better vector for an outbreak of some communicable deadly disease than modern air travel. Well, it turns out that we had really no idea of just how powerful even that vector is. A study being presented this week at the American Society for Microbiology aimed to find out just how long harmful bacteria can survive in an airplane, chilling on a tray-table or armrest or toilet flush button, with the result being up to a full week. Our friend the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) won the contest, lasting 168 hours on the material of a seat-back pocket, while E. coli lingered for 96 hours on a passenger armrest.

"Our data show that both of these bacteria can survive for days on the selected types of surfaces independent of the type of simulated body fluid present, and those pose a risk of transmission via skin contact," said study co-author Kiril Vaglenov in a press statement.

Of course, cleaning things with any sort of attention could likely have cut those durations down quite a bit, but in the real world the going rate of aircraft cabin cleanliness is up for debate.

The Case Against Antibacterial Soap

The Case Against Antibacterial Soap

It's been ingrained in us since childhood. Don't want to get sick? Wash your hands with antibacterial soap. But the same compound we entrust to fend off the sniffles could actually be harming us—and creating an army of superbugs in the process. It's time to ban antibacterial soap.

If that sounds farfetched or alarmist, it shouldn't. In fact, it's already happening. Just this past Tuesday, Minnesota became the first state to ban antibacterial soaps loaded with something called triclosan, a nasty little chemical that comes with a whole host of problems. And you can find it in about 75% of all liquid soaps on the market.

Other states are almost certain to follow in Minnesota's footsteps, but even that ruling doesn't officially go into effect until 2017. So there's a good chance that you'll be seeing the stuff on drug store shelves for years to come. If you do, steer clear.

It Doesn't Actually Help

Ever since triclosan-inclusive products made their way into the home in the 90s, we've put the stuff in everything from liquid soaps and makeup to cutting boards and mattress pads

Considering how prevalent the chemical is in our daily lives, it may surprise you that the FDA has never observed evidence that triclosan-based "antibacterial" soap has any benefit over non-drug-laced varieties. Even though the FDA published guidelines for chemicals in liquid soaps back in 1978, the agency never actually got around to finalizing them—meaning soap companies have never had any federally mandated rules to follow regarding chemical additives.

What the original 1978 draft did find, though, was that triclosan was totally ineffective. The FDA may not have proven definitively yet that antibacterial soap is safe, but they have proven, after 42 years of research and independent studies, it has zero health benefits over normal soap and water.

Colorado’s Marijuana Legalization Creates 10,000 New Jobs

Image

Colorado’s marijuana legalization is quickly turning the state into one of the most prosperous places in the country. Not only has Colorado projected marijuana sales to be a billion dollar industry, but in January of 2014 alone, the state pulled in over $3.5 million in tax revenue from legal pot sales. If that trend continues, the state will enjoy an additional $40 million in tax revenue in the first year of legalization. But that’s not all – you know those dismal unemployment figures plaguing the nation? Not in states where pot is legal. Colorado is reporting 10,000 new jobs, all from the legalization of both recreational and medical marijuana.

A recent report by the Marijuana Industry Group indicates that since January, the state’s new-found recreational pot trade has created upwards of 10,000 new jobs, with 2,000 joining the green collar workforce just in the past few months – this doesn’t include jobs created by medical marijuana sales.

The state is now enjoying one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation – 6% – which is the lowest it has been since the recession started. So much for those old sayings about pot-heads being lazy. That’s an additional 10,000 people in a labor force out working, instead of collecting unemployment. That’s good for everyone.

5 Simple Steps To Help You Eliminate This Deadly Ingredient From Your Diet

No-Sugar
Sugar comes in many forms, and you may be surprised to find out that it actually comes in many different types of foods and you may be consuming more than you realize every single day. Did you know that the average American adult consumes about 22 teaspoons of sugar per day? That’s nothing compared to the average American child who consumes about 32 teaspoons per day. No wonder obesity rates and diabetes rates are higher than they have ever been! We are consuming on average about 150 pounds more sugar per year than we were 200 years ago. If that isn’t alarming to you, I don’t know what would be.

The majority of the sugar that is being consumed is coming in the form of glucose/fructose, (in Canada) or High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS in the USA.) What’s more alarming about this form of sugar is that all of the corn that is used to make this sugar has been genetically modified. This substance can be found in many food items that you would not expect such as: cereals, stuffing mixes, juice boxes, soft drinks, chocolate milk, bread, ketchup, candy, chocolate bars, energy bars, granola bars, cough syrup, crackers, cheese, yogurt, applesauce, pickles, ice cream, syrup, jam, salad dressing, dips, sauces and soups! It is literally in almost everything. Below are some simple steps to follow to being to eliminate processed sugars from your diet.

1. Avoid Soft Drinks, Sports Drinks And Even Fruit Juices

Many people have an addiction to soft drinks, usually Coca-Cola or Pepsi, but consumers are not only addicted to the sugar in these beverages, but also the caffeine that is added to them. Just one can of soda contains 45 grams of sugar, 30 of which are coming from fructose. Compare that to a large apple, which contains 23 grams of sugar, 13 of which are coming from fructose. The main difference here is that the apple will actually leave you feeling satisfied and full of nutrients while the soda has little to no nutritional value and leaves you wanting more. A soda is a can full of empty calories and should be avoided if possible. Soda is most likely one of the leading contributing factors that has led to the increased rise in obesity within the United States and Canada. The States has done an okay job at eliminating soda from schools, but this has largely been replaced with an increase of sports drinks and “fruit” juices which also contain high levels of sugar, sometimes just as much or more than soda.

2. Read Ingredient Labels

Pay attention to what you are buying. Just because something isn’t sweet, it does not mean that it does not contain any processed sugar. Be sure to check ingredient labels carefully. If possible, try and stay away from overly processed, pre-packaged foods. Even fruit juices that claim to be “100% Real Juice” should still be looked over carefully as these juices are usually concentrated and contain extremely high levels of sugar.

Can We Eat To Starve Cancer? The Diet To Keep Cancer Away

william_li_cancer

Cancer rates are rising and they are rising fast. Factors that cause cancer range from what we have in our environment to our emotions to the foods and chemicals we put into our body. Such little attention is put towards prevention in the industry, but new evidence might make it easier for the public to choose foods that actually prevent the feeding of cancer cells.

Have you heard of Angiogenesis? It is the process of blood vessels forming from other blood vessels within the body. Blood vessels help keep our body and organs functioning well. The thing with the process of angiogenesis is we need the right amount of it to happen for things to be running smoothly. Amazingly, the body has the ability to regulate angiogenesis via its own growing and pruning system. The problem is, sometimes this process can get out of control in either direction and we begin to see problems.

If angiogenesis is happening insufficiently we might experience symptoms like chronic fatigue, hair loss, stroke, heart disease etc. If angiogenesis is happening excessively we might experience symptoms like cancer, arthritis, obesity, Alzheimer’s etc. Having too many blood vessels can actually promote a disease as the cells are being fed by excessive angiogenesis. In the case of tumors, more nutrients are being brought to the tumor so they continue to grow.

Focusing on cancer for a moment, angiogenesis happens to be a big contributor to every type of cancer. When angiogenesis is working properly, it helps to stop feeding cancerous cells that lie dormant within the body. So how do we regulate angiogenesis to make sure it’s performing correctly?

New research is being done to discover which drugs and foods are anti-angiogenic so as to help regulate the issue. Already, anti-angiogenesis drugs are being tested and used on animals and humans and results in survival rates are increasing. The problem is these drugs are still toxic and can still create issues within the body. So, while they are much better than chemotherapy and radiation, they still have downfalls. Luckily there are a number of people out there doing research and reporting great results treating cancer with cannabis.

This Is What’s REALLY In A McDonald’s Hamburger

Glorious McDonald’s! Great food at very affordable prices -or so we all wish. There is no doubting that McDonald’s has done a great job of making edible substances at an affordable price. Not too long ago I was in Pittsburgh and saw that McDonald’s offers a family meal where you can get something like 4 sandwiches, fries, nuggets and beverages for $9.99. How can you beat that price? It’s no wonder many people who are tight on cash choose that route vs. going to the grocery store and getting two heads of organic broccoli for the same price.

Of course I’m being sarcastic about approving of McDonald’s foods. After all time and time again their food has been shown to be of low quality. Plus isn’t it kinda common sense that this stuff shouldn’t be eaten often, if at all?

Have a look at what is in a McDonald’s hamburger and see if you would be interested in consuming one of these again. You can also see what’s in a McRib, why you shouldn’t eat their french fries, and check out the strange fibers found in their nuggets.

According to McDonald’s own website, this is the list of ingredients for their popular McDouble, the sandwich that you see in the above video.

Regular Bun:

Ingredients: Enriched Flour (Bleached Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup and/or Sugar, Yeast, Soybean Oil and/or Canola Oil, Contains 2% or Less: Salt, Wheat Gluten, Calcium Sulfate, Calcium Carbonate, Ammonium Sulfate, Ammonium Chloride, Dough Conditioners (May Contain One or More of: Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, DATEM, Ascorbic Acid, Azodicarbonamide, Mono and Diglycerides, Ethoxylated Monoglycerides, Monocalcium Phosphate, Enzymes, Guar Gum, Calcium Peroxide), Sorbic Acid (Preservative), Calcium Propionate and/or Sodium Propionate (Preservatives), Soy Lecithin.

This is a list of side effects caused by the ingredients of just the bun alone:

Ammonium sulfate is a chemical byproduct of steel-making and synthetic fiber production. It was the most common source of lawn fertilizer nitrogen until price increases starting in 2004 reduced its availability.- Bleached White Flour: It has been shown that alloxan is a byproduct of the flour bleaching process, the process they use to make flour look so “clean” and — well, white. No, they are technically not adding alloxan to the flour — although you will read this bit of misinformation on the Internet. But, they are doing chemical treatments to the grain that result in the formation of alloxan in the flour. Alloxan, or CH2O4N2, is a product of the decomposition of uric acid. It is a poison that is used to produce diabetes in healthy experimental animals (primarily rats and mice), so that researchers can then study diabetes “treatments” in the lab. Alloxan causes diabetes because it spins up enormous amounts of free radicals in pancreatic beta cells, thus destroying them.High Fructose Corn Syrup contains contaminants including mercury that are not regulated or measured by the FDA.

Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate: possible side effect is food intolerance.

Azodicarbonamide (Banned in the EU, Singapore, and Australia) is used in the food industry as a food additive, a flour bleaching agent and improving agent. Azodicarbonamide actually relaxes the dough so that when it is divided in large-scale bakeries under pressure, it still retains a good character.  It has been known to cause allergic reactions in those sensitive to other azo compounds, such as food dyes. The consumption of azodicarbonamide may also heighten an allergic reaction to other ingredients in a food. The principal use of azodicarbonamide is in the production of foamed plastics as an additive.

Tobacco Plants May Contain Cure for Cancer, a New Twist in Protein–Lipid Interactions

Ornamental tobacco plant, medicine

Nicotiana alata, the ornamental tobacco plant, has a secret weapon in its flowers: a protein that bursts human cancer cells.

Scientists at La Trobe University published a study this week about a protein found in the flowers of ornamental tobacco plant that targets human cancer cells and destroys them. This raises the prospect of the deepest kind of irony: tobacco grown to produce drugs used to treat cancers caused by tobacco.

Mark Hulett, Marc Kvansakul and others from the Biochemistry Department used a range of techniques to examine the structure and function of a protein called NaD1. This protein is a type of defensin, a molecule that protects the plant from fungal infections. Why it also works on mammalian cancer cells is unknown, but is probably related to similarities of their cell membranes, where the action in this story takes place.

Of blebbing and lysis

In addition to testing the action of NaD1 against various fungi including yeast, the researchers tested its action on human cell lines known to come from lymphoma, cervical and prostate cancer. The action of interest was the disruption in cell membranes, which was measured in a variety of ways.

The leakage of ATP (a common molecule) was shown to happen within minutes of the introduction of NadD1 to lymphoma cells. Cervical cancers cells showed an increase in the uptake of a dye known as propidium iodide, demonstrating a breach of their cell membranes.

More dramatically, live confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to produce films showing cancer cells change shape in the presence of NaD1. Irregular shaped bulges in cells are known as blebs. Blebbing is like blowing up little balloons on the edges of cells, which often precede cell death. When membranes are broken, the contents of the cell are released in a process known as cell lysis.

This pill could stop 90 percent of HIV cases in the US

But only if it reaches the right people

Michael Lucas has been taking Truvada, the HIV prevention pill, for about a year now. And the 42-year-old adult film director and gay porn performer readily admits that the decision wasn't all that hard to make — especially when compared with the alternative. "It just seemed healthier to run the risk of experiencing side effects than to worry about HIV," he says, adding "I come from a generation where people were dying all the time, so I grew up living in fear."

Lucas is part of a small but growing subset of HIV-negative gay and bisexual men who have embraced Truvada, the most widely used incarnation of an HIV preventative drug regimen called PrEP. The little blue pill, which is taken daily and costs $13,000 a year (but is covered by most insurers), helps reduce infection rates by more than 90 percent. But until recently, only a select few were aware of the drug's existence as an HIV preventative. The US government's announcement last week that it was urging physicians to prescribe PrEP to anyone who might be at risk for HIV infection — not just men who have sex with men who might be HIV positive — therefore came as a surprise.
"Soon every gay man will be taking this drug."
"If broadly followed," The New York Times wrote, "the advice could transform AIDS prevention in the United States." Slate took a less nuanced route, referring to the pill as a "miracle drug." But Lucas is even more adamant about the drug's HIV-eradicating potential. "We are there now. This is the breaking point," he says. "Soon every gay man will be taking this drug and we won't have HIV spreading any longer — it'll be over."

These statements are both beautiful and revitalizing — a tone that is, unfortunately, rare in the media's coverage of HIV prevention. But in their rush to embrace a preventative method that is indeed remarkably effective, many missed an opportunity to move the conversation surrounding Truvada forward.

Beyond the guidelines

"We know that the medicine works, it's proven," says Jay Laudato, executive director of the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, which provides healthcare to New York City's LGBTQ communities. "But what was shockingly missing from the government's announcement was ‘how do we integrate this drug into peoples' lives?' and into HIV prevention plans in general." He thinks the drug is a good fit for some people, but Laudato says it's not right for everyone who might be part of an "at-risk" group.

S y n o p s i s

Tom Benedict discussed the healing properties of stones and crystals. Different types of stones have particular frequencies which can match up with various systems in the human body, and help them to function better, he explained. For instance, Black Tourmaline is a great stone to help people stay grounded, focused, and articulate, while Selenite and Apophylite can be used to bring in white light and energy, he said. People can work with the stones by carrying them in their pocket, as jewelry, being held during meditation, or even placed on the body, he detailed.

Tom Benedict found his true calling as a healer and an intuitive that communicates with stones. He has worked with energy and healing for over 20 years, and has learned healing modalities and experienced the healing properties of stones and crystals. In his practice, Tom combines his abilities as a Reiki Master and medical intuitive to work with physical, emotional and spiritual challenges. Tom applies these techniques in his "distance" work.

Top 10 deceptive food marketing ploys that make you sick

food

Oh, the tricky world of food. Millions of people spin in circles like chickens with their heads cut off, blindly shopping for things to put in their mouths and on their skin, like nothing matters. Then you have the other millions of people who think that they know what they're doing, because they saw commercials on TV or read articles in fad magazines, but they are getting fooled across the board too.

Once upon a time, about 80 years ago, German and U.S. scientists together began developing pharmaceuticals and food agents, the ultimate toxic "candle" that burns a wick at both ends. The end result would be millions of Americans needing doctors to heal their food-borne ills. Little did those folks know (nor do they now) that the food they eat and the water they drink will keep adding to the chaos of their FAILING HEALTH, all while doctors (MDs mainly) prescribe pharmaceuticals to kill the pain and reduce the swelling, and surgeons cut out infected body parts and organs that you don't necessarily HAVE to have to survive. Then, as health deteriorates more and more, these same folks are prescribed useless antibiotics, extra vaccines (mercury and aluminum injections), chemotherapy (pesticide) and radiation (cancer fuel) and scheduled for regular treatments (more lies) until they leave this world. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

It doesn't have to be that way. Get smart. Learn the top 10 deceptive food marketing scams and hoaxes, myths and busted legends, and you can free yourself and avoid all of the BIG health traps of "Big Food" and "Big Medicine" that lay before you:

#1. All fats are bad for you!

Magnesium deficiency? Try these 5 foods

magnesium

Magnesium is a very important mineral that has been found to be radically deficient in people's diets, and therefore, their bodies. Since magnesium is implicated in a number of important bodily functions like proper muscle function and triggering hundreds of enzymatic actions, it's very important to understand common food sources of this 'miracle mineral'.

Pumpkin seeds
Pumpkin seeds should be enjoyed more often not only due to their great magnesium content, but for all their other nutrients and benefits as well.

Pumpkin seeds contain about 535mg of magnesium per 100g serving, which is 134 percent of the daily-recommended intake. Adding a full spectrum sea salt to your pumpkin seeds will increase the magnesium content even further.

Pumpkin seeds are also exceptional sources of manganese, phosphorus, iron, copper, zinc, and potassium. Not only that, they also contain nice amounts of vitamin K and B-vitamins.

Use pumpkin seeds to promote sleep, and to prevent osteoporosis, kidney stones, and prostate issues.

Cacao
Cacao, which is derived from the cacao bean, is a food adored by many once it is transformed into what is commonly know as chocolate. The bonus with this superfood is that it backs up that decadent taste with incredible amounts of magnesium and other minerals.

Cacao contains about 499mg of magnesium per 100g serving, which is 125 percent of the daily-recommended intake. Keep in mind that these values are from its raw and powdered form, and that most chocolate products on the market will not have the same values due to the fact they are commonly denatured.

Five foods that can treat insomnia and improve sleep

insomnia

According to the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine, nearly 1 in 10 adults in the United States suffers from insomnia. Although most of these people suffer from short-term insomnia, many of them also suffer from chronic insomnia (i.e., difficulty falling or staying asleep for more than six months). Such sleep deprivation can significantly decrease the quality of one's life.

While stress related to work and family remains the number one cause of insomnia, eating the wrong foods -- such as those rich in sugar, caffeine, gluten or polyunsaturated fat -- can also contribute to insomnia. Therefore, improving one's diet is an important first step toward ending insomnia, especially if one favors foods that are known to improve sleep.

Five foods that aid sleep

1.) Almonds -- Almonds are one of the best foods for treating insomnia since they're excellent sources of magnesium, which is a natural muscle relaxant and contains anti-stress properties. A study published in the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences in December 2012 found that magnesium supplementation could "improve subjective measures of insomnia, such as ISI score, sleep efficiency, sleep time and sleep onset latency, early morning awakening, and likewise, insomnia objective measures, such as concentration of serum renin, melatonin and serum cortisol, in elderly people."
