The Easy 3 Day Detox

You are toxic. And we live in a dirty world. I don’t care if you eat organic, buy local, bathe in all-natural suds, and clean with only water and vinegar. The truth of the matter is that we are constantly bombarded on a daily basis by man-made chemicals, artificial fragrances, and a bunch of other toxins that are not fit for human consumption. While we luckily have organs of detoxification that are meant for removing these harmful substances from our bodies, they can only do so much! They need help and you can give it to them!

Detoxification is a normal process within the body as it neutralizes and eliminates toxins through the major organs such as our colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin.

According to many healing experts, detoxification through special cleansing programs may be the missing link to disease prevention, especially for immune-deficiency diseases like cancer, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome and candida. Our chemical-laden diet, with an overabundance of animal protein, too much saturated fat and too much caffeine and alcohol radically alters our internal ecosystem. However even if your diet is good, a cleanse can restore your immune system and protect yourself against environmental toxins that pave the way for disease bearing bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Whenever I work with clients that are new to cleansing, we always start slowly. You don’t want to detoxify too fast!

I’ve created a simple 3 Day Detox that fits into almost anyone’s lifestyle! Start today as today is the perfect time to start!

**If you have any food sensitivities, substitute! Or email me for suggestions.**

Cacao, red wine prevent type 2 diabetes: Research

New research suggests that red wine and cacao, from which chocolate is made, can help prevent type 2 diabetes.

The study, which was conducted in the United Kingdom, involved 2,000 women and plant compounds called flavonoids which are present in some fruit and berries as well as red wine and chocolate. Researchers found that the flavonoids "protect against the disease of glucose metabolism," the Financial Times reported. Continuing, the paper said:

The research is likely to be seized upon by the sugar industry, which [recently] struck out against being "demonized" by pressure groups.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia conducted the study and published their results in the Journal of Nutrition. It was one of the largest scientific studies of the effects of flavonoids on type 2 diabetes conducted to date.

According to the 2011 figures from the Centers for Disease Control, type 2 diabetes affects 8.3 percent of the U.S. population, or about 25.8 million people; FT reported that about 2 million Brits are affected by the disease.

In conducting their study, East Anglia researchers collected and analyzed blood samples and monitored food consumption of 2,000 volunteer subjects.

'An exciting finding'

"We found that those who consumed plenty of anthocyanins and flavones [types of flavonoids] had lower insulin resistance," said Professor Aedin Cassidy, the research leader. "High insulin resistance is associated with type 2 diabetes, so what we are seeing is that people who eat foods rich in these two compounds - such as berries, herbs, red grapes, wine - are less likely to develop the disease."

As further reported by FT:

The biochemical mechanisms behind the findings are unclear, though the researchers suspect that flavonoids raise levels of a protein called adiponectin, which regulates glucose metabolism.

Tim Spector of King's College London, who was also involved in the research, called it "an exciting finding that shows that some components of foods that we consider unhealthy, like chocolate or wine, may contain some beneficial substances."

However, Alasdair Rankin - research director of the charity Diabetes UK - said the study's results should be taken with caution.

Understanding the benefits of natural olive oil

Everyone knows that natural and organic foods are far more healthier than their processed counterparts. Unfortunately, many people don't take to heart this valuable piece of information, and they continue to consume food products that are completely unhealthy for them. In doing this, they often develop a wide array of preventable health conditions. The road to getting healthier can begin today, and it can start by incorporating natural olive oil into one's diet. In fact, let's go ahead and take a quick look at five healthy benefits of natural and organic olive oil.

Benefit 1: Good for the heart

Bad cholesterol, medically referred to as LDL, can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease. Because of this, people need to do all that they can to limit the amount of bad cholesterol that develops in their bodies. Natural olive oil has been proven to reduce the amount of arterial plaque that builds on the walls of arteries; therefore, making it a great weapon in the fight against heart disease.

Benefit 2: Boosts iron intake

Organic and natural olive oil tend to have high levels of iron. Iron helps formulate hemoglobin, which is the protein in the body that helps carry oxygen through the bloodstream. Iron also plays a key part in building enzymes that regulate immune functions. Additionally, iron is essential in the overall cognitive development of a person. Basically, the more iron a person has, the healthier he or she will be, and consuming natural olive oil is a great way to boost iron intake.

Benefit 3: Protects against cancer

Cancer is a disease that finds its way into every family. Whether it be colon, breast or skin cancer, almost everyone knows of someone who has died from the disease. Fortunately, consuming natural olive oil will help fight against cancer. How does it serve as protection? Mainly, it's because it contains phenolic antioxidants, terpenoid and squalene, all of which are great weapons against the development of cancer.

Benefit 4: Reduces pain

Because natural olive oil tends to contain high levels of oleocanthal, it works as a strong anti-inflammatory substance, meaning it mimics the properties of ibuprofen. Because of this, natural olive oil is a great natural pain reliever. Whether it be a headache or arthritis pain, many people testify that natural olive oil can reduce the associated pain.

Traditional Chinese Medicine pill halts progression of diabetes in new study

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has treated maladies and health issues for thousands of years with herbs and acupuncture. Yet, to appease the western world's view of "evidence-based medicine," various trials and studies are performed, often comparing TCM to modern pharmaceuticals, in order to prove efficacy and safety.

There have been some recent studies comparing pharmaceuticals to TCM herbal remedies for prediabetes and diabetes type 2. It's well known that all pharmaceuticals have side effects and most herbal remedies do not. But instead of accepting 2,000-plus years of experience with TCM herbs, randomized, double-blind tests must be done to convince modern medical institutions.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA): "Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have 'prediabetes' - blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes." The ADA also goes on to say that prediabetes doesn't necessarily need to lead to diabetes type 2.

The CDC says that 79 million Americans over the age of 20 may be prediabetic. There are various ways of avoiding diabetes type 2 even if one is prediabetic. Altering one's diet from processed foods to mostly whole plant foods (non-GMO) and exercise are two approaches. Minimizing sugar without using artificial sweeteners and reducing stress are two other helpful changes.

Western medicine offers pharmaceuticals to be taken with or before meals. Three that are most commonly prescribed are glibenclamide, acarbose and metformin. Those are the drug names which appear under a few different brand names.

Side effects include severe gastrointestinal irritation, inhibited vitamin B12 absorption leading to anemia, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), liver damage and increased homocysteine levels that can lead to cardiovascular disease, among others. Not to worry. There are pharmaceuticals for all those side effects too.

Some Babies Mistakenly Injected with Oral Vaccine

A baby visits the doctor

Some health care providers make a mistake when giving the rotavirus vaccine to babies, injecting the vaccine as a shot instead of placing drops in the infant's mouth as is required, a new report finds.

Between 2006 and 2013, there were 39 reports of the rotavirus vaccine being administered as a shot, according to the publication, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In six cases, a nurse who did not receive proper training administered the shots, the report said. In about 50 percent of cases, the child experienced a side effect from the vaccination error, including redness at the injection site. [5 Dangerous Vaccination Myths]

The reasons people made the error included inadequate training, misinterpreting or failing to read vaccine instructions, and confusing the vaccine vial with one used for an injectable vaccine, the report said.

The rotavirus vaccine, which was introduced in the United States in 2006, protects against a stomach bug that can cause severe diarrhea. Before the vaccine, 20 to 60 children younger than age 5 died yearly from the infection, and 55,000 to 70,000 were hospitalized every year, according to the CDC.

The vaccine is one of the few infant vaccines designed to be delivered by mouth (orally). An injected dose is not considered a valid dose, the report said.

"Vaccination providers should follow instructions in package inserts regarding proper administration," the report said. "Administration errors are largely preventable with proper education and training."

Since such mistakes can go unreported, the study likely underestimates the number of rotavirus vaccination errors, the researchers said. Still, with about 55 million doses of the vaccine delivered so far, "these incidents appear to be rare," the report said.

The report also notes the potential danger of getting the vaccine in the child's or someone else's eyes. In 27 cases, the report states, the provider attempted to deliver the vaccine orally as directed, but the vaccine splashed in someone's eye. In 18 of these cases, the infants coughed, sneezed, or spit the vaccine into the eyes of either the provider or the child's parents, and in three cases, infants splashed the vaccine into their own eyes, the report said.

How Monkeys with Modified Genomes Could Help Fight Human Diseases

These monkeys' genomes were edited using the Crispr technique. Image: Cell, Niu et al.

In a world first, researchers in China successfully modified genes in monkeys using a precision technique. These macaques’ genomes were engineered with a precision previously unseen in primates, and the development is making waves—both among scientists searching for disease treatments, and groups opposed to animal testing.

The obvious attraction of using monkeys in this kind of application is that they resemble humans a lot closer than other lab animals, which the authors of a paper outlining the study in the journal Cell explain makes them an “important model species for studying human diseases and developing therapeutic strategies.”

In the past, “GM” monkeys have been developed to glow in the dark thanks to the insertion of a fluorescing jellyfish gene, but that was little more than a proof of concept that we can manipulate monkey genes in general.

Now, it’s all about specificity. In this new research, three particular genes in the monkeys were targeted: one that regulates metabolism, one that regulates the immune system, and one that regulates stem cells. The idea is that, in the future, we could precisely modify monkeys to recreate human diseases that are based in genetics, and then use them as models to develop new treatments.

The idea of a genetically modified monkey might sound far out, but we’ve been heading in this direction for a while. To modify the monkey embryos, the researchers used a fairly new technology called Crispr, which essentially allows scientists to really accurately edit specific genes in what's often characterised as a "cut and paste" technique. It’s a transgenic technology that makes the idea of designer babies a whole lot more feasible, for better or worse, and Technology Review reports that it's already been practiced on mice, rats, and zebrafish.

Toxins in vaccines infiltrate the brain

The blood brain barrier prevents dangerous substances and infections from entering the brain. If the barrier is compromised, the brain is susceptible to any toxin or bacteria circulating in the bloodstream. Toxic detergents contained within vaccines can destroy the blood brain barrier and then proceed to transport the poisons contained within vaccines directly into the brain.

At birth, the blood brain barrier is not fully formed. This barrier is not intact until at least six weeks of life, and many argue it may not actually be fully developed until much later. Any virus or bacteria to which an infant is exposed can go directly to the nervous system. This lack of a mature blood brain barrier is just one reason why vaccines given to infants are especially concerning. Seniors are also severely affected because aging is a factor which causes the barrier to become more permeable. Over-immunization also weakens the barrier.

Children who follow the established vaccine schedule currently receive 49 doses of 14 vaccines before the age of six, and 69 doses of 16 vaccines by the age of 18. Hypertension, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, strokes, and head injuries also contribute to increased permeability.

While those with a compromised blood brain barrier might be the most susceptible to vaccine ingredients, detergents like Polysorbate-80, Triton X-100, Polysorbate 20, and sodium deoxycholate, can permeate even a well-established barrier. Polysorbate-80 is used in pharmacology to assist in the delivery of certain drugs across the blood brain barrier. The same is true for vaccines and with the help of Polysorbate-80, or another type of detergent, many other toxic vaccine ingredients including viruses, bacteria, and heavy metals, may pass through to permanently alter brain function.

Not only are these detergents destroying the blood brain barrier and allowing more toxins to enter the brain, they can also cause cancer and programmed cell death.

Injected Polysorbate-80 has been shown to increase incidents of blood clots, stroke, heart attacks, heart failure, infertility, severe anaphylactoid reactions, and even death. Many of the Polysorbates are considered to be carcinogens. Female rats administered Polysorbate-80 suffered from reproductive organ damage.

Aluminum induces neurotoxicity by altering mitochondria of brain cells

Aluminum's role in causing neurotoxicity and contributing to a number of degenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, has been widely discussed and is supported by a number of studies, though the exact mechanism remains inconclusive.

Now, scientists have reached a better understanding of its role in killing brain cells by studying the effects of aluminum on mitochondria inside neurons, which are responsible for several critical maintenance roles, including the production of ATP by metabolizing oxygen, as well as regulating the inner cell membrane during neurotransmission.

The life and death of the neuron is largely in the hands of mitochondria, and mitochondrial dysfunction is now thought to be hugely responsible for dead brain cells and neurotoxicity - through both necrosis and apoptosis. Dysfunction in neuronal mitochondria compromises cell integrity - in part through the creation of free radicals - and contributes directly to aging and the rise of degenerative diseases and metabolic issues.

Chinese researchers affiliated with the Institute of Occupational Medicine at Tongji Medical College investigated how aluminum induces alterations in the mitochondrial structure, disrupting its important functions and leading to neurotoxicity.

Their study examined the neural cells of rats that were exposed to aluminum, probing the ultrastructure of the mitochondria under an electron microscope. Their results suggested that aluminum may impair the mitochondria's membranes and cristae (folds in the inner membrane) - both vital to aerobic cellular respiration, where mitochondria use oxygen to generate the vast quantities of ATP needed for neuronal function and neurotransmission. It also suppresses enzyme activity in mitochondria.

A 2008 study was conducted by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in India to research the effects of chronic lower-dose exposure to aluminum administered intragastrically - in the rats' stomachs - over the course of 12 weeks. DNA damage via oxidation was observed, as well as disruptions to the cell cycle of neurons, inviting cell death due to improper mitochondria action.

Influenza Vaccine Facts They Don’t Want You to Know!

Influenza (flu) season is here. The media and CDC have been heavily pushing the influenza vaccine for over a month already. However, research has shown that this year’s flu shot is extremely toxic, ineffective and unsafe! Did you know that the 2013-2014 influenza vaccines contain dangerous levels of mercury? The vaccine contains 25,000 times more mercury than the safety limit for drinking water! Did you know that infant and pediatric flu deaths were on the decline until 2003 when the pediatric influenza vaccine was introduced? After that, the pediatric death rate skyrocketed! Before you choose to vaccinate yourself and your children, get the facts about the influenza vaccine.

I have recently written several articles on the problems and dangers of the flu shot. Read here about why the flu shot is more dangerous than the flu. You can also read here about how the media-reported flu deaths have been hyped up in order to scare people into the flu shot. Healthcare decisions, in general, can be complicated. The vaccine decision is even more complicated due to the vast amount of conflicting information. Before you make these decisions, I urge to move past the hype and get the facts!

Most importantly, you must know that your body is intelligently designed to fight the hundreds of influenza viruses that cause the flu. Your immune system is amazingly well equipped to help you prevent colds, flu and even cancer. Developing a flu-proof immune system is an essential part of your health plan this year. You can stay well! Even if you do get sick, you can overcome the flu and heal.

This astounding report was written by Mary Tocco, independent vaccine investigator. She reveals the truth about this years influenza vaccines and the facts that the pharmaceutical industry and the CDC do not want you to know. This is information provides facts not hype. It is exactly what you need in order to confidently make your decision about the influenza vaccine.

Clean your Body’s Drains: How to Detoxify your Lymphatic System

Did you know that we are exposed to 82,000 different toxins, chemically-based products and processed foods in our environment weekly?

Detoxification is the body’s natural, ongoing process of eliminating harmful toxins from the body so that it can function at its best. Toxins are man-made chemicals found in the air, water, food, household cleaners and cosmetic products as well as waste products produced by normal cellular activity.

When toxins enter the body through the skin, nasal passage or mouth, the body prevents “pollution” by surrounding the toxins with fat and water and stores them in different areas of the body.  This can put a strain on our body’s own detox system (the liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs, skin, blood and lymphatic systems). These systems can become burdened as they try to safely excrete toxins.

Our bodies were not meant to work this hard to maintain optimal functioning.  By adding a  detox program to your wellness regimen, you can help pull these toxins, along with the excess fat and water, out of the body and improve your health quickly.

The Lymphatic System: Forgotten Hero

The lymphatic system is the most forgotten and least understood system in the body. It is critical to the detoxification process. The lymph travels parallel with the blood system and is responsible for the removal of wastes from every cell in the body, in addition to regulating the immune system. The lymph is thus a very important system to support optimal health.

Keep Your Body’s Drains Clean

The lymphatic system is like the garbage system of the body. Proper functioning of the lymphatic system is essential in order to properly eliminate wastes. Our lymphatic system can become and remain congested and stagnant for many years. Thus, we often live in an environment of toxins that weakens our immunity. Proper lymph drainage will eliminate these toxins and assist the body to function optimally.

Digestion: Where It All Begins

The body’s ability to detox starts in digestive system, in the villae of the small intestine.  The “lacteals” in the villae are part of the lymphatic system and they pull nutrients and fat-soluble toxins off the intestinal wall. If the gut is constipated or there is excessive reactive mucus bogging down the villi, the lymph and its white blood cells may not provide immunity or detoxification.

Save 90% off Dental Bills: 3 Simple Steps

Did you know that over 90% of all gum and teeth problems begin between the teeth?  Taking care of your gums and between the teeth can eliminate many of your dental issues, possibly save your teeth and ultimately save you a lot of money.  There is a space that surrounds each tooth, called the sulcus. This is the area that we need to keep clean and healthy to optimize our dental health.  If you experience tender, bleeding or sore gums, chances are you are heading towards a new dental bill.  The key is to get the problem under control and then use a simple but proven 3 Step process to maintain healthy gums.

Dr. Behm developed a simple, inexpensive and effective way to improve the health of the gums around 20 years ago.   This simple maintenance program was developed to help anyone efficiently and inexpensively improve the health of their gums no matter what the current condition. This simple process improves redness, swelling and bleeding of the gums and minimizes the need for surgery.

Bacteria, Plaque and Tartar

The important thing to do is to break up and remove plaque and bacteria that forms around the teeth and gums at least once every 24 hours.  This system is for anyone who wants to eliminate the dental disease process on their own or can also help you regain healthy gums and teeth.

Perhaps you’ve seen weeds growing out of a rain gutter.   They look a little out of place, don’t they?  Well, the reason they’re growing there is because there is nutrition and a favorable environment for them to grow.  A similar thing occurs in the sulcus.  The more space, the more it will support the growth of life that shouldn’t be there, as this is a warm, wet, oxygen-free environment with lots of food that’s already been chewed! (Ray Behm, D.D.S. behmnaturaldentristy.com)

You’ve Lost the Weight…Now What?

Whether you’ve just dropped the last ten pounds or you’ve been off of your diet for a few weeks, you know that the work doesn’t stop when your scale finally says the magic number. If you’re a serial dieter who’s tried it all, you know that keeping off the weight once you’ve finally lost it can be just as difficult (if not more!) than losing it in the first place. How do you keep up the momentum and keep all of your hard work from going to waste? Here are a few ideas to help you stay at your perfect shape:
  1. Change your goal: It’s easy to think of the “magic number” or size that you want to be at when you’re “finished” your diet, but the truth is, if you view the changes you’re making as a diet, they’ll be short lived. Instead of thinking in the framework of numbers, make getting healthy your goal. This transforms your diet into a lifestyle change that doesn’t finish when the numbers on the scale are low enough, and it’s a long-term goal that continues past fitting into your goal jeans.
  2. Purge your past: If you’re a yo-yo dieter, you know it can be tempting to keep a few pairs of “fat jeans” for days when you’re feeling less than your best, but resist the urge. Purge your closet of any clothes that don’t make you feel confident and are now too large, so that if you feel your new clothes getting tighter you know it’s time to get back on track and be a little stricter with your exercise and calorie intake.
  3. Prepare for challenges: If you’re not on your best behavior 100% of the time, you need to know how to differentiate acceptable slip-ups from unacceptable ones. For example, having one small scoop of ice cream versus binge eating a tray of brownies with your girlfriends is a big difference. If you’re going to a party, try to wear something that reminds you to stay on track, like the pearl necklace you bought to reward yourself for reaching your goal. Every time you touch it, you’ll remember how hard you’ve worked to get where you are.

3 Tips for Keeping Teens Healthy

When I was the mom of two toddlers, I thought that I'd have so much less to worry about as the years passed. But now that my daughters are in their teens, I know that worry still exists – and it's still strong.

I no longer have to worry about them sticking fingers into electrical sockets or drinking something from under the sink. But I do spend time thinking about how their lives will be after they leave the house. Will they be happy? And more importantly, will they be healthy?

I surely hope so, and that's why I took comfort in the results of a European Heart Journal study published this month. The study indicates that teens who are more physically active may be less likely to suffer a heart attack later in life. The study was done on adolescent boys, but I can only imagine that regular exercise in these years is good for the girls too.

My daughters have always played sports and been active in other ways, and they have some good eating habits too. But what can you do if your teenagers seem to be following an unhealthy path? They are on their way to adulthood, so the teen years are a good time to cut off problem behaviors before they begin. [10 Ways to Promote Kids’ Healthy Eating Habits]

But, also because they are on their way to adulthood, it can sometimes be difficult to get through to teens.

Here are my tips for encouraging teens to be healthy:

Some Reasons Why You Should Avoid Sleeping Pills

We’ve known for a long time that hypnotic drugs are not good to take for more than one to three weeks because they are habit-forming and increase the risk of accidents. And there’s now a growing body of evidence that shows they could be increasing the risk of premature death.

Hypnotics are medicines prescribed specifically to help people suffering from insomnia get a good night’s sleep. This includes people who have difficulty getting to sleep as well as those who struggle to stay asleep.

The class of hypnotics prescribed the most are benzodiazepines or very closely related drugs. In this benzodiazapine class are temazepam (Normison, Temaze), flunitrazepam (Hypnodorm) and nitrazepam (Mogadon).

While these drugs are typically prescribed to people suffering from insomnia, some other well known benzodiazepines such as diazepam (Valium), oxazepam (Serepax) and alprazolam (Xanax) are also prescribed for anxiety.

The “Z” group of newer hypnotic medicines such as zolpidem (Stilnox) and zopiclone (Imovane, Imrest), are very similar to the benzodiazepines in their mechanisms of action and have identical issues.

Problems and more problems

Despite claims to the contrary, no hypnotic delivers sleep of the same quality as natural sleep. And there are a number of proven non-drug treatment options for insomnia, such as simple relaxation techniques that are definitely better in the long term.

Psychobiotics: How gut bacteria mess with your mind

Gut bugs can change the way our brains work, offering new ways to relieve problems like stress, anxiety and depression, say two leading professors

WE HAVE all experienced the influence of gut bacteria on our emotions. Just think how you felt the last time you had a stomach bug. Now it is becoming clear that certain gut bacteria can positively influence our mood and behaviour. The way they achieve this is gradually being uncovered, raising the possibility of unlocking new ways to treat neurobehavioural disorders such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

We acquire our intestinal microbes immediately after birth, and live in an important symbiotic relationship with them. There are far more bacteria in your gut than cells in your body, and their weight roughly equals that of your brain. These bacteria have a vast array of genes, capable of producing hundreds if not thousands of chemicals, many of which influence your brain. In fact, bacteria produce some of the same molecules as those used in brain signalling, such as dopamine, serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).

Furthermore, the brain is predominantly made of fats, and many of these fats are also produced by the metabolic activity of bacteria.

In the absence of gut bacteria, brain structure and function are altered. Studies of mice reared in a germ-free environment, with no exposure to bacteria, show that such mice have alterations in memory, emotional state and behaviour. They show autistic patterns of behaviour, spending as much time focusing on inanimate objects as on other mice. This behavioural change is driven by alterations in the underlying brain chemistry.

For example, dramatic changes in serotonin transmission are seen, together with changes in key molecules such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which plays a fundamental role in forming new synapses.

These findings give weight to the notion of probiotics – bacteria with a health benefit. Probiotics were first proposed by Russian biologist Élie Metchnikoff who, in the early 1900s, observed that people living in a region of Bulgaria who consumed fermented food tended to live longer. However, it now seems that certain bacteria – dubbed psychobiotics – might have a mental-health benefit, too.

Turmeric Extract Strikes To The Root Cause of Cancer Malignancy

Turmeric Extract Strikes To The Root Cause of Cancer Malignancy

A new turmeric study published in Cancer Letters is paving the way for a revolution in the way that we both understand and treat cancer. Titled, "Targeting cancer stem cells by curcumin and clinical applications," U.S. researchers evaluated the primary polyphenol in the Indian spice known as curcumin for its ability to target cancer stem cells (CSCs), which are believed to be at the root cause of tumor formation and malignancy.

Whereas conventional models of cancer assumed that the majority of the cancer cells within a tumor possess self-renewal capacity to differing degrees, the CSC model proposes that, "[T]he initiation, maintenance, and growth of a tumor is driven by a minor population of cancer cells termed cancer stem cells (CSCs)," and that "These CSCs undergo continuous self-renewal and differentiate to heterogeneous cancer cells, yielding new tumors recapitulating the parental tumors, while the majority of cancer cells lack self-renewal capacity."

In other words, the CSCs are at the apex of a hierarchy of cells within the tumor, and are the "mother" of the various daughter cells that make it up, most of which are intrinsically benign. Conventional treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, based on a rodent model with a 2-year experimental window to evaluate treatment efficacy and safety, was incapable of comprehending the CSC-mediated cause of post-treatment tumor recurrence, which in humans can take decades after initial treatment to manifest. Although it was possible to debulk a tumor with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, CSC populations were often missed or even enriched as a result. When the tumor mass regrew it often became more invasive and treatment-resistant, resulting in the rapid demise and death of the patient -- deaths which are often written off inaccurately or disingenuously as non-treatment related.

Given that conventional treatment can drive an intrinsically benign tumor (i.e., so-called indolent tumors) into greater invasiveness through increasing the number of intrinsically resilient cancer stem cells at the very same moment that it kills the less or non-harmful daughter cells, alternative treatment approaches are needed now more than ever.

The Cancer Stem Cell Killing Role of Turmeric (Curcumin)

Turmeric and curcumin extract have been extensively studied for their ability to kill various cancer cell lines. In fact, the literature is so abundant (see: 600 health benefits of turmeric) that it is both surprising and disheartening that so many patients who are in need of safe, effective and affordable treatments are not being given information about it.

Science Confirms: The More Coffee You Drink, The Longer You Will Live

Young Brunette Enjoying Cup of Coffee
Coffee is one of the healthiest beverages on the planet.

It is more than just dark-colored liquid with caffeine… coffee actually contains hundreds of different compounds, some of which have important health benefits.

Several massive studies have now shown that the people who drink the most coffee live longer and have a reduced risk of diseases like Alzheimer’s and diabetes.

Coffee is a Major Source of Antioxidants

When hot water runs through the coffee grounds while brewing, the substances in the coffee beans mix with the water and become part of the drink.

Some of these substances are well known, including caffeine, but there are hundreds of other compounds in there as well, many of which science has yet to identify.

Many of these compounds are antioxidants that protect our bodies from oxidation, which involves free radicals that damage molecules in the body.

Without getting into complicated details, oxidation is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind ageing and common diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Coffee, believe it or not, happens to be the biggest source of antioxidants in the Western diet, outranking both fruits and vegetables… combined (1, 2, 3).

When you’re treating yourself with a cup of coffee, you’re not only getting caffeine but a whole bunch of other beneficial compounds, including powerful antioxidants.

Lemon: The quintessential cancer destroyer and all-around health tonic

After the excesses of the holiday season, the unassuming lemon can offer much needed relief for an overtaxed body. Jammed packed with nutrients, this upbeat fruit is a cost-effective way to trim down, detoxify and boost vitality. Lemons also conceal a little known health secret - that is, by enjoying the entire fruit (juice, rind, pith and seeds), we can strongly discourage cancer, bone loss, hypertension and more.

Inexpensive gateway to health

Many are familiar with the famous lemon detox diet and have reaped the benefits of the protocol, such as glowing skin, better digestion and a slimmer body. However, few are aware that lemons are also an exceptionally potent treatment for thrush, parasites and calcium stones in the urinary tract.

A study in the International Journal of Phytotherapy and Phytopharmacology found lemon juice was more effective in healing oral thrush in HIV patients than the standard remedy of gentian violet. And researchers at Bakirkoy Research and Training Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey discovered lemons are a viable alternative to potassium citrate in the treatment of urinary calcium stones. Traditionally, lemon peel oil has been used to discourage intestinal parasites, while the vitamin C-rich juice and rind help to increase bone mineral density.

What's more, Dr. Chakravarty, chief science officer and member of the Hope4Cancer executive team, notes that lemons:

Regulate blood pressure
Treat acne
Alleviate depression, stress and anxiety
Possess antibacterial and antiviral properties

Don't trash the peel

Exposure to non-stick cookware linked to delayed menstruation

A class of chemicals commonly used in non-stick cookware, stain-resistant clothing and furniture, automobiles and a variety of other consumer products has been found to cause delayed menstruation in young girls. A Danish study recently published in the journal Human Reproduction reveals that girls whose mothers were exposed to perfluorinated compounds during pregnancy experience their first menstruation an average of about five months later than non-exposed girls.

Beginning in 1988, researchers from multiple institutions across Scandinavia collaborated to evaluate how perfluorinated compounds affect reproductive function, particularly in females who have yet to have their first period. To do this, they collected blood samples from 343 pregnant women over the course of two years, documenting the various levels of perfluoroalkyl substances in their blood and comparing the results.

Twenty years later, the researchers administered questionnaires to the mothers' daughters, who were asked to record the times they had their first periods. From this, the team compared levels of exposure to perfluorinated compounds with the time of the girls' first periods to make an associative connection. And what they found speaks volumes about this pervasive chemical class and the damaging effects it appears to be having on developing girls.

"In adjusted regression analyses, daughters exposed to higher levels of PFOA [perfluorooctanoic acid, one of the most common perfluorinated compounds] in utero had a 5.3 months later age of menarche compared with the reference group of lower PFOA," wrote the authors in their findings. "Crude and adjusted trend tests also indicated a relationship between higher prenatal PFOA exposure and delay of menarche."

You can read the full study abstract here:

PFOA and other perfluorinated compounds linked to host of debilitating illnesses in both males and females.
Though this particular study focused on young females, related research on PFOA and other perfluorinated compounds has revealed that the pervasive class of chemicals is also damaging to males.  According to carefully documented research compiled by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), perfluorinated compounds are demonstrably toxic to every single organ and system of the body.

Lingonberries Could Prevent Obesity and Diabetes

STOCKHOLM – Lingonberries, a fruit common in Scandinavian cuisine, may be able to help prevent weight gain and high sugar and cholesterol levels, Swedish scientists said Thursday of a new study.

In the study, which was conducted by researchers at Lund University using mice with a tendency to store fat as a model for overweight humans, the animals were fed a high-fat diet and different types of berries during three months.

“Lingonberries were the best berry in the manner that they limited the weight gain of the high-fat fed mice,” said Lund Univeristy diabetes researcher Karin Berger.

The high-fat fed animals given lingonberries did not put on more weight than a group that had eaten a low-fat diet in the same period, and their blood sugar levels were similar.

Also, their cholesterol levels were lower than those of the mice that had a high-fat diet without any berry supplement.

The other fruits used in the study, which was published this month in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, were bilberries, raspberries, crowberries, blackberries, prunes and acai berries.

The researchers were surprised to find that the Brazilian acai berry, which has been marketed as a superberry with weight-loss properties, had the opposite effect on the mice.

They led to “weight gain and higher levels of fat in the liver,” the researchers explained in a statement, where they also said the lingonberries’ results could be due to their content of polyphenol, an antioxidant.

The team plans to develop the experiment on humans, but does not have a starting date for the project.

The researchers said that up to 20 percent of the mice’s diet was lingonberries.

“It isn’t realistic for humans to eat such a high proportion,” Berger said in the statement. “However, the goal is not to produce such dramatic effects as in the ‘high-fat’ mice, but rather to prevent obesity and diabetes by supplementing a more normal diet with berries.”

Top 6 Health Benefits of Cabbage

Many people joke about the sometimes embarrassing after-effects of consuming cabbage, but the truth is, this cruciferous vegetable can help your health tremendously. While red cabbage is known to have the highest levels of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties over the other varieties (green and Savoy), eating any kind of cabbage provides extraordinary healing and overall health benefits.

From fighting constipation and maintaining a healthy weight to keeping heart problems at bay and warding off Alzheimer’s disease, cabbage is a vegetable that should be in every kitchen.

Top 6 Reasons to Start Eating More Cabbage

1. Strengthens the Immune System

The vitamin C content in cabbage actually rivals that of oranges, making them a must-have food when it comes to banishing free radicals. Considered an ideal antioxidant, vitamin C is said to help slow down the aging process, heal wounds faster, treat certain cancers (one study showed women to have less breast cancer complications when cabbage and other similar vegetables were incorporated in their diet) and even reduce some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, cabbage contains sulphur, also known to boost the immune system by fighting microbial infections.

2. Relieves Constipation and Resulting Complications

Like most cruciferous vegetables, cabbage is rich in fiber and provides the body with the necessary roughage. This means that our body retains enough water so that what is passed through our bowels has a bulkiness that effectively removes waste from our system. Without adequate roughage, one may develop constipation which in turn can contribute to a host of other health problems including headaches, gastrointestinal cancers and a variety of skin disorders.

Low Zinc Levels May Cause Depression: Research

If you’ve been suffering from depression, you may want to have your doctor check your zinc levels. A new study published in the journal Biological Psychiatry has shown that individuals who have been diagnosed with depression often have lower concentrations of the mineral in their bloodstream.

The study discovered that supplementing zinc in addition to antidepressant therapy may result in more effective or rapid improvement in a patient’s symptoms. Walter Swardfager, Ph.D. believes that this is because zinc deficiency itself may cause depressive-like behavior. Zinc supplementation reverses these symptoms.

This is not the first study to have pointed to zinc as a cause of depression. In fact, many studies that have measured zinc levels in both depressed and non-depressed patients have shown that depression may be associated with a lower zinc level.

For this study, researchers conducted a meta-analysis to see whether clinical evidence supported these results. The study was able concluded that the average blood-zinc concentrations did appear lower in depressed patients.

In addition, the study found that the more severe a patient’s depression, the greater the difference in zinc levels in control patients and depressed patients. This may be because of zinc’s antioxidant properties.

Proper levels of zinc help the body maintain correct endocrine levels and support immune function. Zinc also plays important roles in regulating cognitive function.

Testosterone May Help Boost Women's Low Libido

Women who experience a drop in their sex drive after taking antidepressants might be helped by testosterone therapy, a new study from Australia suggests.

In the study, women on antidepressants who wore a patch that delivered the hormone testosterone daily reported having more sexual experiences they called "satisfying," compared with women who wore a placebo patch.

By the end of the three-month study, those who wore the testosterone patch had about two additional satisfying sexual experiences per month, compared to their typical number. In contrast, those who wore the placebo patch had about the same number of satisfying sexual experiences at the beginning and end of the study. No adverse side effects related to the male hormone were seen. [51 Sultry Facts About Sex]

Decreased sexual desire is a known side effect of antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and low libido may become a problem for those who need to take the drugs over the long term, the researchers said. The 44 women in the study, who were ages 35 to 55, all felt that their libido had dropped since starting antidepressants.

The study "provides the first evidence that [testosterone-patch] therapy may be a treatment option for women with SSRI/SNRI-emergent loss of libido who need to remain on their antidepressant therapy," the researchers wrote in a study published Jan. 16 in The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The results are "very exciting," said Dr. Lynne Shuster, an internal medicine physician and women's health specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., who was not involved with the study. "This is a very common problem for which we don't have good treatments," Shuster said. Sexual side effects from antidepressants can lead to discontinuation of medication or reduced quality of life, Shuster said.

The Myth of Age-Related Cognitive Decline

Older men at coffee, aging, age-related decline

Getting older and slower may just be the result of more experience than younger folk.

The tide is changing in our understanding of old age. For a long time, behavioural scientists have thought that old age is associated with cognitive decline such as memory problems, and difficulties in learning and concentration.

But in this month’s Topics in Cognitive Science, linguistics researcher Michael Ramscar and collaborators demonstrate that this way of thinking may be fundamentally wrong

Healthy ageing, Ramscar explains, may be nothing more than gaining experience, and then dealing with the consequences of having learnt from that experience:
Older adults’ changing performance reflects memory search demands, which escalate as experience grows.
In other words, as people get older, they gather more experiences, they learn more names for things, and they potentially better understand how the social and economic systems around them work – and this makes them slower.

So while youth has the benefit of speed and flexibility, age has the benefit of wisdom and guile … and slowness.

The trade-off

Some of this we already know, even if we’ve never really thought about it in this context. Years of research have shown that older people have larger vocabularies than younger people, other things being equal.

In their paper, Ramscar and associates show that even this we’ve probably underestimated, because older people tend to know a lot of very low frequency words such as “zaftig” and “arroyo” and “byzantine”, words that are difficult to test because there are so many of them. Younger people tend to know fewer of these words.
